It was late at night, long past visiting hours, but Renji didn't care and just glared at any doctor or nurse that tried to get him to leave. One had tried to tell him that only family members were allowed during the non-visiting hours. Renji had quite calmly told them that he was her family now.
Mizu had briefly opened her eyes for a moment, but they had slid shut again just as quickly.
Renji had leaned his head against the high backed chair he was sitting in, his large hand covering the one of Mizu's that didn't have an IV in it. "I'm so sorry." He whispered. "I should have been there to protect you." His throat was dry. He hadn't had anything to eat or drink since his mother gave him the tea earlier that afternoon. His eyes slid completely closed and he fell into a fitful sleep.
"Renji?" A female voice reached his ears, but it wasn't the one he wanted to hear. A hand shook his shoulder. "Renji." His eyes opened briefly and adjusted. It was his mother.
"Hmm? How's Mizu?" He asked, glancing to the body on the bed.
"Still asleep." Tori said. "I told the administration about what happened and said that until this is resolved, you and Mizu won't be there. I'm sure Seiichi and Genichiro will keep you caught up." Renji nodded. "Mizu on the other hand..."
"Akaya is in her class. I'm sure he'll help her get caught up."
Tori nodded and looked at the girl. "Don't blame yourself. Come on, I'm sure she'll still be here in the time it'll take to eat something." Renji nodded sleepily, and pressed a kiss to Mizu's forehead.
"I swear I'll be the first person you see when you wake up." He said quietly, and went with his mother to the cafeteria.
After they had gotten their food and sat down, Tori cleared her throat. "I told your father what you told me."
Renji paused. "And...?"
"He thinks you're both too young to think of such things." Tori smiled. "He knows how much you care about her though, shown by the fact that you didn't come home last night. He was kind of worried, but after I explained everything he was much more understanding." Renji nodded. "As for what she's going to do when she's released, I don't want to separate you two, but Mizu needs her own space as well. So officially, Kana's room is hers. Though I don't ever want to...witness what I did the other morning. That's what love hotels are for." Renji blushed deeply. "I know, it sounds cheap and gimmicky, but really, it's for the best. How do you think your father and I conceived you?"
Renji's eyes went very wide. That was something he really didn't need to know. "And speaking of rather embarrassing things, remember what I said the other day? I meant it. I know you want to spend the rest of your life with her, but I would like to see the wedding first, grandchildren second."
Renji wondered if he could get away with crawling under the table and dying. "Oh, don't think Mizu won't be spared this speech because she won't. I know how teenagers think, and you're going to want to try something soon." Tori continued on. "Something much more than what you were doing the other morning."
"Mother..." Renji sighed. They all had the safe sex talk way back in junior high, and again a couple of years later.
"Just be responsible about your actions, Renji."
"I always have been, haven't I?" He smiled, and tried to force a few more forkfuls of food down.
"Yes, you have. Though the best laid plans can always go awry." Tori warned.
"I know, Mother." Renji said, standing up with his tray. "I know all too well." He said, returning the tray and heading back to Mizu's room.
He returned to his vigil, occasionally napping in the chair even though it really wasn't comfortable. Renji had skipped lunch. His mother brought him something later in the afternoon. He smiled and thanked her quietly. His cell phone rang. He glanced at the clock, seeing it was after school hours.
"Hello?" He greeted.
"How is she?" Seiichi's voice came across the air.
"Pretty much the same." Renji answered, staring at her.
"She'll make it." He tried to reassure his friend.
"She will." Renji agreed. "Did you take notes for me?"
"We did. Don't worry about school right now, worry about her."
"You guys are too much sometimes."
"Mizu's one of us now, Renji. We're worried about her too." Renji smiled to himself.
"Thank you. I'll let you know the moment something happens." He told Seiichi and hung up. Tori ran her fingers through her son's hair.
"Want me to stay?" She asked quietly.
"I'll be fine." Renji said. "Thanks." Tori smiled at him, and left.
About an hour later there was a small moan from the bed. Mizu's eyes blinked open and readjusted to the dim light and turned her head. "Ren..?" She tried to get out, but her throat was dry. Renji jumped up.
"Mizu!" He took her hand. "I was so worried." He helped her sit up and offered her some water which she sipped at.
"Thanks." She said, looking around. "How...what...?"
"I found you yesterday, knocked out. Why didn't you tell me it was that bad?"
"It wasn't." Mizu looked up at him. "Not until...that morning. My head hurts." Renji nodded.
"It's bruised pretty well." He said. "I don't know what happened."
Mizu shook her head. "You don't want to know."
"If you want to talk about it, I'll listen." Renji squeezed her hand. "You're not going back there."
"But...where will I go?" Mizu looked at her boyfriend.
"Where do you think?" Renji asked, smiling. Mizu blushed a little.
"Is it...alright?" She asked. Renji nodded.
"It's alright." Renji murmured. "Mom said that Kana's room is yours, but her and father aren't going to keep us apart."
Mizu smiled. "Renji?" She stared up at him, feeling quite overwhelmed. "Don't ever leave me again?" She asked.
"I won't." Renji promised, leaning down and kissing her.
"You two are so married." A voice teased from the door way.
"Seiichi!" Renji stepped back and blushed a little.
"Yukimura-sempai!" Mizu greeted, smiling. "Nice to see you."
"Too bad it's not under better circumstances." Seiichi said, taking a seat. "I brought your notes and the homework assignments."
Renji laughed. "Thanks." He said.
Mizu looked up at him. "You didn't..."
"I was too worried about you. I spent all night here."
"Renji..."
Yukimura looked a bit shocked, but smiled. "It's about time you dropped the -kun from his name." He said. "And speaking of that, I told Renji that you're one of us now. You can call me 'Seiichi' if you'd like."
Mizu blushed. "I couldn't do that."
"Well, whatever." He shrugged.
"Guys, go on home. I'll be alright." Mizu told them.
Seiichi nodded and stood up. "Come on, Renji." He said quietly.
"In a moment." Renji said, standing up as well. He made sure Seiichi had gone on ahead.
"Go, Renji." Mizu said. Renji leaned down and kissed her.
"I'll be back tomorrow." He said quietly. Mizu smiled.
"I know." She said. "Renji?"
"Hmm?"
"I love you." Renji smiled at that.
"Rest now." He said, picking up the notes that Seiichi had left. Mizu watched as he left, thinking how toned his backside looked even through the rumpled school uniform he was wearing.
Mizu was released a few days later, and had a nervous few days before settling in with her boyfriend's family. It was different, but much more comfortable. Renji let her be for a few days before getting up the courage to spend the night in the same room with her.
They were lying together on the bed, just relaxing for the afternoon. Mizu was still sore from her ordeal, but was getting better.
"Mizu?"
"What is it?" She asked, her eyes closed, to tired to open then. She felt Renji's hand take hers and press a small metal object in it. She blinked and sat up. "Renji?"
He sat up as well. "I...don’t know how you'll take this. I know we're really young yet, but...I don't think I can live without you. I just...I'm not asking for marriage just yet. Though once you've graduated high school, I may. I just want you to have something that says your mine."
Mizu smiled and slipped the ring on. "Everyone knows anyway." She said, kissing him.
