If there was anything that Yanagi Renji was sure of it was that between schools he had been in, nothing was really different.
He looked around the junior high school he had chosen. The sempai were ignoring him, a few were giving him double takes since he looked rather girlish and was wearing the men’s suit that was Rikkaidai’s uniform. Renji took a deep breath and headed towards his classroom. He slipped into the room quietly, taking a seat near the back and took a deep breath and closed his eyes in a type of meditation before class officially began.
“Renji? Is that you?” A high pitched voice that sounded familiar called out to him, and before Renji knew it, a set of arms had thrown themselves around Renji’s shoulders.
“Seiichi! I didn’t know you were going to in my class.”
“Luck of the draw, I suppose.” Yukimura said, smiling and taking the seat next to Renji. “Are you going to join the tennis club? They’re unbeatable! They’ve taken the nationals for the last 15 years! We have to do it! Oh!! Genichirou’s down the hall…I think he’s in class seven. We’ll have to find him at lunch.” Yukimura continued on, barely taking a breath between his thoughts.
Renji just stared for a little while. How did this boy do that? Renji picked out the important bits of the other boy’s thoughts. “Yes, I am going to join the tennis club, and yes, we’ll find Genichirou at lunch.” He promised Yukimura. It was the first of many promises he would make to the enigmatic boy.
Lunch finally rolled around, and as promised, Renji joined Yukimura on his search for their other friend.
Yukimura practically jumped on Sanada when they found him and launched into almost the same thing he had excitedly told Renji earlier. Sanada just grunted as Renji calmly ate his own lunch, and stole random pieces of Sanada’s lunch when he wasn’t looking. It was a tradition that Renji just couldn’t give up - besides, Sanada’s mother was a much better cook than his own.
“Alright, so anyway, Renji and I are going to join the tennis club. Are you going to join us?” Yukimura asked Sanada slyly.
“Why? My parents are expecting me to join the kendo club.” Sanada answered, stealing back some of his lunch from Renji.
“Genichirou!” Yukimura whined. “Please. Don’t you want to be on a team that actually wins national tournaments? Have you seen how horrible the kendo club is?”
“That’s why I was planning on joining them. I at least know what I’m doing, and I don’t have to learn anything new.” Sanada defended his decision.
“Hey, with me and Renji, you’ll be almost at a pro level by the time we’re half way through first year. I know you’re quick learner.” Yukimura said, a twinkle appearing in his eye. “I want to go to Nationals every year of junior high. I can’t do it alone. And I need more than just Renji’s support.” He said, staring Sanada down, giving the other boy the patented Yukimura Bambi eyes.
“Seiichi, that’s disturbing.” Renji said, trying to ignore the huge, watery eyes. They were rather creepy, but they definitely made Renji want to do anything Yukimura asked. “Genichirou, please join us. I think we should make a pact. Club sign-ups aren’t until the end of this week anyway.” Renji informed them, glancing at the clock. Their lunch period was almost over. “Meet us on the roof after school.” Renji said, packing away his bento box.
Renji sat mostly still, taking notes during all his classes. The only time he moved was to go to the biology lab for their science class which was at the end of the day. Yukimura perked up at seeing all the plants in the lab, and Renji just noted what type of plants they were, and wondered what classes were responsible for them.
Yukimura tended to stay close to Renji. They each made other friends, but it was good to stick to the familiar. Yukimura was spaced out during their science class - he figured he could just copy Renji’s notes later. Renji glanced over at Yukimura occasionally. He frowned once he realized his friend wasn’t actually taking notes. Renji kicked Yukimura’s leg under the table to get his attention. Yukimura just glanced over at his friend, and winked at him.
Renji wrote a quick note to Yukimura. “Never do that again.” It said. Yukimura just chuckled quietly and kept writing his own little project. At least it looked like he was taking notes. Renji sighed quietly, and actually paid attention to the lesson.
“Rennnnnji~~” Yukimura whined right after the dismissal bell rang. “Come on! I’m sure Genichirou’s already on the roof! Hurry up!!’ Yukimura bounced on his feet as Renji neatly arranged his notes and text books.
“I’m sure it will take him a little longer than it will us. His class doesn’t have science their last hour.” Renji said, having glanced at Sanada’s class schedule during lunch. It was rather hard to miss considering it had been written on their classroom’s chalkboard. “We’ll be there in plenty of time.” Renji said, gathering his books in his arms. “Did you get it written?”
Yukimura grinned and nodded. “The three of us are going to join the tennis club, and we’re all going to go to Nationals all three years. And if even one of us breaks this promise….” Yukimura trailed off, but turned to Renji with a completely serious look on his young face. “The one that fails will be punished.” He said. “No exceptions.”
Renji shivered a little at that promise.
Yukimura and Renji stood just outside the roof garden waiting for Sanada. It was about fifteen minutes before Sanada finally joined them.
Yukimura practically attacked Sanada when he finally made it. “You’re going to join us, right?” He said, his eyes shining. Renji leaned against the wall, just watching the other two. “Sign the pact? Please!” Yukimura begged.
Sanada sighed a little, but nodded his agreement. “I’ll join you two in the tennis club. What’s this about a pact though?”
“Seiichi and I have drawn up a pact that says the three of us will go to Nationals as regular members of the tennis club and that we will win all of our matches or there will be severe punishments dealt to those of us that fail to adhere to this pact.” Renji explained, setting it on the ground before them. “I’m willing to agree to it.” He said, turning to Sanada.
Sanada grunted, his own agreement to the pact as he took Renji’s pen to sign the five kanji of his name.
Yukimura grinned as he signed the pact last. “We’ll let Renji take care of this.” He said, handing it back to Renji. Renji folded it carefully and placed it in his science text book so he wouldn’t lose it.
“I’m glad you trust me so much.” Renji said, smiling a little. “I’m sure we didn’t need this, but a written promise means so much more.” Renji said, standing up, more than ready to go home. “I’ll see you two tomorrow.” Renji bowed to them and took his leave.
“Renji!” Yukimura called after Renji. Renji turned around and looked at him, silently questioning what Yukimura wanted. “Can I borrow your science notes?!” Yukimura asked sheepishly. Renji chuckled and handed Yukimura two pages.
“I thought you weren’t taking notes, so I already made a copy of mine for you.” Renji said, smirking a little and left for sure this time. This would prove to be an interesting school year.
