The weather had been perfect yesterday. Everyone had been outside on the tennis courts, practice matches going on, no one coming even close to beating any of the top three of their team.
“Why is it snowing at this time of year?” Yukimura complained as he hit a ball back towards the machine that had spit it at him.
Yanagi Renji watched this carefully, noting angles and speeds in the back of his mind. “The weather doesn’t change just because you want it to, Seiichi.” He said, taking Yukimura’s place in front of the ball machines.
Yukimura pouted a little as he went to stand out of the way to watch Renji. He frowned a little as Renji returned the balls. “You’re getting sloppy, Renji.” He commented.
Renji just nodded in agreement with that assessment. “I’ve been sloppy for too long. You know it’s been a few years since I’ve played competitively.” He said, checking his grip and the strings of his somewhat new racquet.
“You’ll be back to normal soon.” Yukimura said, going over and turning the machines off. “I still can’t believe it’s snowing.” Yukimura sighed before heading towards the locker room. “I can’t believe we’re the only ones that showed up for practice either.” Yukimura grumbled.
“Their loss.” Renji said, following Yukimura. “Besides, I can’t really blame them. I think we’re about the only two truly dedicated now. We’ve lost too many people from junior high. And I rarely see Genichirou at practice. I can’t tell if he’s upset that you made me your vice-captain or if he just is that busy.”
Yukimura just shrugged. “You know how he can be sometimes.” Yukimura turned around to face Renji and grinned. “Want to have sex in the locker room?”
“Seiichi…” Renji sighed a little, but smiled to himself. “Not today.” He answered. “Though maybe when we get home.”
“You’re no fun, Renji.” Yukimura pouted a little, but understood Renji’s reluctance.
“No, I want to get home and have a chance to relax.” Renji corrected, smiling. “Did you remember an umbrella?” He asked.
Yukimura sighed. Of course he hadn’t - he wasn’t expecting rain or snow today. And then the white crystals of water had started falling during his last lecture of the day - right before the tennis team’s scheduled practice. So many of the team had decided that since they couldn’t practice outside, there wasn’t going to be any practice. Yukimura had posted that they were to report to the gym, but apparently Renji was the only one that had noticed.
“We can share mine.” Renji said, noticing the look on Yukimura’s face.
Yukimura nodded and brought himself out of his thoughts. Renji had noticed Yukimura falling into his own head, and decided that meant that his boyfriend would be taking an extra long shower. Renji showered quickly, and sat down with the one text book that always went to practice with him.
Yukimura took the extra time Renji had suspected, and walked out of the shower stall with his hair dripping wet and a towel around his slim waist. Renji glanced up at him, and almost reconsidered his answer to locker room sex.
Yukimura got dressed quickly while Renji put away his book and waited for Yukimura to get dressed. “Did you do that deliberately?” He asked when Yukimura grabbed on to his arm.
Yukimura grinned. “Would I do something like that?” He asked innocently. “Besides, I’m still upset that you’re the only person to show up. But I’m glad you did. It means you’re taking your new responsibility seriously.” He said, a bit more serious.
“It still feels a bit strange.” Renji admitted. “Especially after all those years of Genichirou being at your side to lead everyone.” He said as they stepped out into the snow that was still falling. Spring was supposed to be in the air, and here Mother Nature had decided that Old Man Winter needed to get one last breath in.
“You’ll adjust, Renji.” Yukimura said, still cursing the weather. “Besides, I think you’ll be much more effective at telling everyone how disappointed we are. I know I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of harsh words from you.”
Renji nodded a little and smiled tightly. “I hope so.” He said, making sure the umbrella covered both of their heads. “If nothing else, they will be working extra hard after this little stunt. I’m surprised the people that we knew from junior high and high school didn’t show up. Do they not remember how strict you are when it comes to tennis?”
“Apparently they didn’t.” Yukimura sighed. “Round robin matches tomorrow? And we are definitely going to make sure the courts are cleared and playable.” He promised, then turned to the sky. “And you’re going to cooperate!”
Renji chuckled lightly. “Just because they call you the child of god, doesn’t meant that the ones that might control the weather are going to actually do it.”
Yukimura just punched Renji in the shoulder. Renji just kept grinning.
