“You’re quiet today.” Hiyoshi watched Shinji as his friend curled up on his couch. “It’s not like you. Usually you’re rambling away a mile a minute. Did something happen?”
“I…yeah.” Shinji drew his attention away from the storm raging outside to look at Hiyoshi. “I guess you could say that….”
Hiyoshi leaned forward, a little concerned at Shinij’s reticence. “Come on, what happened? You know you can tell me anything, right?”
Shinji glanced down into his coffee mug, then back at Hiyoshi again. “Well…I met someone.”
“Is that all?” Hiyoshi laughed. “Shin, love, you’re always meeting someone. So, what happened with this one? Was he good in bed? Bad?” Hiyoshi moved onto the couch next to Shinji, making it easier to gossip.
Shinji blushed faintly. “I…I don’t know,” he murmured softly. “We haven’t, well, done anything yet. I mean, we’ve kissed and all, but there’s been no sex or anything.”
Hiyoshi blinked, stunned. “I have to admit, that’s the last thing I expected to hear from you.” He was quiet for a moment. “How long have you been seeing him?”
It was Shinji’s turn to hesitate. “Almost four months, now.”
“Wow.” Hiyoshi stood, going into the small kitchen to pour himself some more coffee. For several moments, the sound of the storm was all that could be heard. “Shinji…how do you feel about this guy?”
Shinji bit his lip, putting down his mug in favor of staring at his hands. “You’re going to laugh, but…I think…I could be falling in love with him.”
Hiyoshi almost dropped his coffee mug. “You…love…damn.” He abandoned his coffee in the kitchen, going back to sit beside Shinji and drawing his friend into his arms. “Come on, babe, tell me about it?”
“It started out like so many others.” Shinji chuckled, laying his head on Hiyoshi’s shoulder. “We met in a bar. I was drunk…he was getting trashed because a relationship of his had just ended.” He blushed. “I took him home with me. I know we didn’t have sex…I think at most we just made out a bit before passing out. And in the morning…it was different. Neither of us felt like rushing anywhere. It just felt…right.” Shinji sighed. “Nothing really feels right to me, but that…that did.”
Hiyoshi nodded slowly, running a hand through Shinji’s hair. “And you’re still together?”
Shinji nodded. “We decided to take it slow,” he said. “He just got out of a serious relationship, and he didn’t want to break me in case this is just a rebound. And really, I don’t want to be broken either. I’m tired of breaking. But in all that time…I haven’t minded waiting. I haven’t even felt the need to look at anyone else! I’m…I think I’m happy, like this.”
“And you deserve happiness.” Hiyoshi chuckled. “So, does this paragon among men have a name?”
“Oishi Shuichiro.”
“Oishi…he was with that doubles partner of his. They broke up?” Hiyoshi was stunned by that.
“They did. Well, it was more Kikumaru leaving him, but still.” Shinji shrugged. “Hence the slowness.”
“And…you’re happy, like this?”
Shinji nodded. “It’s weird. I don’t mind waiting, because I care about him, and I think he cares about me, too. I don’t want him if he’s going to be thinking about someone else while he’s with me. I can wait until all he sees is me.” He grinned. “But when that day comes, you better believe I’m going to pull out all the stops!”
Hiyoshi grinned. “Well, damn, if you go all out on the guy the first time, he might die,” he teased his friend.
Shinji glared at Hiyoshi, but there was no heat in it. “Not at all. I’m just going to make sure that he can’t even bring himself to think of anyone else.”
“If anyone can do that, it’s definitely you.” Hiyoshi nodded. “You think you’re ready, though? I mean, you’re over….” He didn’t say the name, but he didn’t have to.
“Ryoma.” Shinji sighed. “Wakashi, I don’t know if I’ll ever be over him completely. He was my first…well, everything. First love, first sex partner, first friend outside my isolated group. I’m not sure if it’s possible to ever be over that completely. But I have to face facts. Ryoma…he’s not going to be coming back. Not anytime soon, anyway, and nor should he.” He sighed. “He’s got a destiny to fulfill, and I’m not going to keep him from it. But I can’t wait forever, either, for a maybe.” Shinji twisted a little to look into Hiyoshi’s eyes. “I have a chance to be happy, truly happy, so I’m going to take it.”
Hiyoshi smiled and kissed Shinji’s forehead. “Then take it, and be happy. You know I want to see you happy. All of your friends want to see that.” He grinned suddenly, his expression becoming a little wicked. “So…I guess this means no more threesomes with Keigo and I?”
Shinji smacked Hiyoshi, even as he was laughing.
