Title: The Tree
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane/Kitty Fane
Prompt: 026 - Teammates
Word Count: 120
Rating: G
Summary: A unbidden memory surfaces.
Walter had left for the village, to go and take soil samples or slice up tomatoes or whatever it was he was doing to try and save the people of this godforsaken backwater.
Kitty wished they were back in Shanghai. She stared out into the trees and unbidden, a memory came to her, of when they had decorated a little Christmas tree that Walter had fashioned. How they’d laughed when he had topped the little plant with a star they had made from embossed paper.
It had looked so festive. And they had made it together.
Kitty almost missed him.
Then she got a hold of herself and went back in to their house. They were not on the same team now, and she didn’t see any laughter in their future.
Title: Gloriously Sunday
Prompt: 040 - Sight
Word Count: 140
Rating: G
Summary: AU fic.
Kitty had never thought she could be this content. But on a Sunday afternoon, when the dinner had been eaten, and when you were watching your handsome husband and your adorable son squinting and laughing at things under a microscope, what could you be but happy?
Gloriously happy.
Father and son were almost identical in looks - both had those July sky blue eyes - and that made her happy too.
There wasn’t a thing in the world she wished for. And, Kitty thought with a smile, she was so different to the young woman who had danced with a blonde-haired doctor on a whim all those years ago.
She was glad of it.
Title: Without You
Prompt: 065 - Passing
Word Count: 67
Rating: PG
Summary: Walter is buried. Movie spoilers!
She would not think about Walter’s body in that shroud. It’s not him, it’s not him, the little voice in her head and her heart chanted. Because it couldn’t be. Because after realising how much she cared about him….
How will I go on without you?
Her hand flew to her stomach. There was life there.
Please, let Walter be your father.
Title: She willed it.
Prompt: 096 - Writer's Choice
Word Count: 123
Rating: PG
Summary: Kitty has rushed to nurse Walter.
Kitty slept. Although he probably needed a bath and a change of clothes - his garments were soaked in sweat - Walter did not want to wake her.
He could hardly believe that she had come all this way to nurse him. She had come here with no thought for herself, only for him. The thought had made his heart soar, even as his body was weakened by the cholera.
He would survive, because she was with him. Walter could feel her love for him every time she changed his shirt, every time she mopped his brow and pressed a kiss to his cheek. He would live, because she willed it so.
And he prayed that it was enough. It had to be. He had an unborn child that he wanted to see in this world.
