Title: Socialising
Fandom: The Painted Veil (2006)
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: 060 - Drink
Rating: PG
Summary: Kitty's a bit drunk.

The whiskey hit the right place. Kitty relaxed back into the cushions in Waddington’s makeshift lounge and let her eyes drift slowly closed. It had been so long since had socialised - since they had gone out properly to see friends - that she wanted to be awake and enjoy herself. But the alcohol was already seeping into her blood, making her limbs heavy and her mind fuzzy.

She glanced across the room at Walter. He was smiling. Funny, she’d never realised how attractive his smile was. Perhaps she was already more drunk than she’d thought.

Title: Pale
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: 020 - Colourless
Rating: PG
Summary: Walter must do what's needed.

Walter stared down into the well that the people of Mei-ton Fu used for their daily water. He couldn’t see down inside to the colour of the water. It looked so pale to him, translucent, perhaps a cool blue-grey.

It would need to be tested. Only he and Yu could have access to it. And that, ultimately, would mean cutting off the town’s water supply.

He lowered a small bucket down into the darkness of the well and hated himself for being the one to do what was needed.

Title: Deserving
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: 005 - Outsides
Rating: PG
Summary: Kitty learns a lesson.

Appearance wasn’t all that mattered. Kitty understood that as she lay in bed, watching Walter sleep.

When she had married him, she hadn’t realised how deep his compassionate side was. H cared for all living things. He had a deep-seated need to help his fellow man, to be selfless, to do what was needed when no-one else could, or would.

When Kitty saw that, she saw how handsome he really was - both on the inside and the outside.

But, with that taken into account, what had she done to deserve her looks? How pretty was she, deep down inside?

It was something she really didn’t wish to dwell on.

Title: False charm
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane
Prompt: 100 - Writer's Choice
Rating: PG
Summary: A short walk.

“That sounds charming.”

Walter winced as they walked. Perhaps she hadn’t been listening to what he had said, “It’s, ah, quite the opposite actually.” People bustled past them, carrying flowers and shopping bags, gossiping and laughing.

“Oh.” She looked up at him. She was so pretty, Walter thought, with her curling brown hair and bright blue eyes. He was surprised she’d agreed to come out with him. Normally he was sure she’d be seen with some handsome jack-the-lad, a man who would always be ready with a compliment and a flower.

Walter could do one better than that - at least he could show her a part of the world she’d never have seen before. Somewhere exotic.

Title: Yes, my dear
Characters: Dr Walter Fane, Kitty Fane, menton of Charles Townsend
Prompt: 076 - Who?
Rating: PG
Summary: Kitty gets her just desserts. Adultery's never good.

Lying dry-eyed in bed, Kitty imagined how Charlie might respond if he was asked about her by his wife. “Who?” he'd say, affecting a casual air. “Oh, Mrs Fane, yes, charming woman, but no-one compared to you, my dear.”

He was a silver-tongued bastard. Now she was going to die of cholera in a tiny village and it was all his fault.
