"When did this become a call-in show?" Renji murmured under his breath. "Turn your phone off already." He told Tezuka.
Tezuka gave him a blank look. "It might be important."
"Judging from as many times as you've hung up without saying a word, I assume it's not. They can leave a message."
Tezuka stared at Renji like he'd lost his head. "Yanagi-san, I take it you've never heard Inui leave a message."
Renji blinked at this, surprised. "Ah, I have had that displeasure." He remarked, pulling out his own phone and started typing out a text message.
"What are you doing?" Tezuka asked, glancing at the clock. The commercial break was almost over.
"Sadaharu easily falls for a snipe hunt." Renji said, pressing send. "He won't be bothering you for a while."
Tezuka's eyebrow rose a bit. Renji sat back in his chair. "It's like a dangling carrot to him. Promise him some semblance of an excuse to gather data, and he jumps." Renji explained. "Sadaharu is a rather simple person sometimes." He commented as they went back on the air.
The rest of the show went on without a hitch.
Tezuka breathed easily as they went off the air. "So I take it you've gotten meaningless calls from Inui before?"
"I've actually fallen asleep listening to Sadaharu go on about nothing." Renji admitted. "I know that sounds rather rude, considering we're friends, but..." Renji trailed off.
"Ah." Tezuka replied. "Though at this point, I think he expects me to hang up on him. It's...a bit of a ritual."
Renji chuckled. "What are friends for, after all." He said, as they left the studio.
Tezuka paused, blinking. He'd never really thought of any of his teammates as friends before. And out of everyone on the team, him and Inui were perhaps the ones that didn't really too many friends. Even Echizen had more friends than he did.
Renji turned and looked at him and smiled. "Sometimes people will gravitate to those that they have absolutely nothing in common with, or very little." He commented. "I'm sure Sadaharu has his reasons why he assumes you have any interest in his trivial matters."
Tezuka's phone went off. He glanced at the caller ID display. Inui. He sighed a little and answered.
Renji leaned against the wall, listening to the non-conversation at the end he could hear, counting the seconds until Tezuka hung up. He was surprised when instead of hanging up, Tezuka actually spoke back to Inui.
"Inui. Are you doing anything today?" Renji was sure his old friend had much the same expression on his face wherever he was calling from. He missed the rest of what Tezuka asked, so shocked he was.
Renji raised his eyebrow at Tezuka. Tezuka just stared at him. "Tell anyone, and you won't live to see your next birthday." Renji chuckled and shook his head.
"I won't tell anyone. Though I'm sure I'll hear all about it later. Like I said, Sadaharu is a very simple, and predictable person." Renji glanced at his watch. "Ah, I need to catch my train. I'll see you next week." He said, taking off at a jog. He paused a moment and turned back. "Have fun." He said, running off again.
