"Hey, Renji!" Yukimura Seiichi called after his friend. "I haven't seen you in a while." He said as he caught up to where Renji had paused to wait for him.
"It has been a while." Renji admitted. "I wasn't expecting to run into you before you left the country."
"I’m not going for a few weeks, yet." Yukimura smiled at him. "Do you have some time? Or do you have to get back to the wife?" Yukimura teased him.
Renji sighed a little. "We're not married yet."
"Yet is the key word." Yukimura said, grinning. Renji shook his head and started walking again. Yukimura followed along, not sure where they were going. "You know I'm teasing you."
"I know, Seiichi. Unfortunately, I do have to get home, but not for the reason you think." Renji admitted. "I was out on an errand for my mother."
"Ah." Yukimura said quietly. "I'll walk with you then." He declared. "It's not that much out of my way." He admitted.
"It's only been a month since we graduated, Seiichi. It's not like it's been years." Renji said.
"It might be." Yukimura said quietly, looking down. "I don't think I'll be coming back."
Renji stopped and turned to his friend. "You haven't told anyone else this, have you?"
Yukimura shook his head. "Only my family." He admitted. "I don't think I can tell anyone else. They'll just beg me to come back after I finish. I haven't even decided for sure. He said, starting to walk again.
"What are you running away from?" Renji asked. Yukimura looked at him.
"What did you run away from? Or did you run to something?" Yukimura returned.
"Fifteen-love." Renji murmured under his breath. "So you think something greater awaits out there across the ocean? No plans to play professionally? We've all seen the scouts at your games during the last year."
"Don't get me wrong, I still love tennis, and even though I could make a career out of it, I know it won't last forever." Yukimura admitted. "I would like to make a name for myself, but..." Yukimura trailed off.
"I think I understand." Renji said, pausing at a pedestrian crossing to wait for the light. "There really isn't much for you here then." Renji felt a stab of regret in his heart. They headed across the street as the light turned green.
"What about you, Renji?" Yukimura suddenly asked.
Renji smiled a little. "What else would I do with all I know?" He asked. "I'm planning on teaching."
Yukimura chuckled. "That just like you." He said. They walked along in silence for a while. They weren't too far from Renji's home by now. It had been a companionable silence. "I don't suppose I can ask something personal?" He started quietly.
Renji looked at him. "Depends on what it is." He said. "I won't guarantee that I'll answer."
Yukimura blushed a little. It had been nagging at the back of his mind for a while, even if was really none of his business. He sighed a little before going through with it. "Have...have you and Mizu-chan...had sex?"
Renji blinked. That was certainly the last thing he'd expected to hear from his friend. "Do you think I'd tell you if we have?" Renji commented. "But to be honest, no." He said, leaning against the nearest wall. "Well, not in the traditional sense. We've fooled around, but nothing more than that." He admitted. He turned his gaze towards Yukimura. "Why did you want to know?"
"I'm curious." Yukimura said. "I was going to ask what it was like if you had, but I guess I can't continue on with that." He said, chuckling.
"I suppose not." Renji said, smiling a little. "It's not that we haven't thought about it. She still has a year of high school left. So I'm always left wondering about the consequences, and I just can't bring myself to do it." Renji laughed. "Who ever thought a man would admit that?"
Yukimura smiled. "It shows you honestly care about her, Renji." He said. "I hope I find someone I care about just as much as you care about Mizu-chan." He commented.
"You will, Seiichi." Renji said, pushing off from the wall. "What day are you leaving for sure?" He asked.
"At the end of July." Yukimura said. "It'll be more specific a little later. I still need to get all the paperwork in order and such."
"Just don't leave without saying goodbye." Renji said.
"I'm not you." Yukimura stuck his tongue out at Renji. Renji laughed at that.
"I have no more reasons to run away from anything." Renji said, mentally evening the score to fifteen-all. "Oddly enough, even with everything that's happened with Mizu's family, and everything over the past year...I'm happy. We've had fights, but we've always made up. She adores me, and I adore her right back. Other might not find her attractive, but I do." Renji looked very thoughtful.
"And that's exactly why we tease you about being married already." Yukimura grinned. "I never thought I'd see Yanagi Renji look so happy. You get this far away look on your face whenever you think about her." Yukimura laughed lightly. "In all the years I've known you, at least two-thirds of them were spent looking worried or depressed. Honestly, I was worried, and really wanted to find a way to help you. I guess I did in a way, didn't I?"
Renji smiled. "Yes, I suppose you did. I still haven't forgiven you for that though."
Yukimura pouted. "Renji..." He whined. "It was for the good of both of you."
Renji chuckled quietly. "It did work out In the end. So I suppose I will forgive you." He paused for a second. "This time."
Yukimura laughed outright. "What do you mean, 'this time'? I never had a chance to set you up with anyone else." He complained. "I didn't think you'd fall in love with the first girl we'd introduce you to."
"Well, it happened." Renji said. "Even I'm surprised, to be honest."
"When are you two getting married, anyway?" Yukimura asked.
"The June after she graduates." Renji answered. "So next year. I suppose you won't come back for it."
"Send me an invitation. I'll try to come for it, but I can't promise anything right now." Yukimura told him as they walked up in front of the Yanagi's house. "Thank you, Renji." He said quietly.
Renji tilted his head to the side, a bit confused.
Yukimura just smiled. "You know why." He said, and turned to get back on his own way.
Renji just shrugged and went inside. He could figure it out later.
