The first half way decent day of spring arrived, and Takayama Mizuko breathed it in deeply. It wasn’t too warm, nor too cool. It felt like the perfect time for eating lunch outside. And that was exactly what she did after her last lecture of the morning. She had a couple of hours to just sit, eat, and study.

She barely noticed when her now fiancé joined her. She noticed when he took her hand and tilted her face up for a kiss.

“Oh, sorry.” She said, looking back down at her books.

“I’m not mad. Looks like you have a lot of studying to do.” She blushed.

“Yeah…” She sighed.

“Something wrong?” He asked her.

“No, not yet.” She said, nuzzling his long neck. “Don’t want to let it get to be a problem either, Renji-kun.”

It was his turn to laugh nervously at that. “Are you referring to that?” He asked.

“I sometimes wonder what if…..” Mizuko trailed off.

Renji tousled her hair. “I prefer to think that things worked out as they should have.”

“Even if….” Renji kissed her to cut off her words.

“Even if.” He said. “And if you insist, we can talk about it later. After all, you never did completely explain what happened that evening.”

“I’m not sure you want to hear the story.” She said, smiling sadly.

“I only know about half of it, and that was the half that I witnessed in the morning.”

“Well, it didn’t look good from anyone’s point of view.” Mizuko said, standing up. “I’ve got to get to class. Like you said, we can discuss this later.” She stole a quick kiss and rushed off. Renji stared after her, wondering if he had opened a can of worms that should have just stayed sealed to the end of time.

As the first one home to their small, shared apartment, Renji started cooking dinner. Mizuko came in about a half hour later, thankful for the smell of food. She slipped off her shoes and set her book bag down, sitting down at the traditional style table they had. She laid her body back so it was more lying down than sitting up.

“That can’t be good for your back.” Renji told her, helping back up to a sitting position.
Mizuko just groaned.

“Stay like that, and I’ll bring dinner out.” He said.

Mizuko smiled a little. “Have I told you lately that you’re too good to me?”

“Quite often. I’d have to check on my official count of things that you tell me often though to be certain.” He quipped back at her. She shook her head at that, and waited for him to sit down and join her at the table before eating.

She ate slowly, almost lost in thought. “So, did you want to continue the conversation from earlier?” She asked.

“I must say I’m curious.”

“What if…you don’t like hearing part of it?” She asked.

“Is it going to affect the here and now?” Renji asked.

“Probably not. It’s not like we’ve seen or heard from them for a while now.” Mizuko mused.

“Missing them?”

“Maybe a little. They were always good for a laugh. Though how they managed to keep together I’ll never figure out.” She smiled. “Alright, so, you remember when I blew up at you because you were studying for finals before winter break your senior year?”
Renji nodded in agreement. “I wasn’t entirely certain what that was about, and I’m still confused to this day.”

Mizu looked at him and laughed. “I’d just chalk it up to hormones and such.” She told him and stole a kiss. “Anyway, I was moping around all day, and then that snow storm started. I’d been hanging around the gate, and I think someone told me you had already left, so I was dragging my feet in the snow. Niou-kun comes up behind me and starts asking stupid questions.”

“He knows how to pry in his own way.”

“The first question out of his mouth was ‘Aren’t you Yanagi’s girlfriend?’”

“Alright, point taken.” Renji replied, looking a bit sheepish.

“We’d been together for over a year, so it was definitely a stupid question.” She smiled. Niou was one of his teammates she actually liked as a friend. “Anyway, I honestly didn’t know how to answer that question as the time, as I was seriously considering dumping you.”

Renji gasped a little. She grinned. “I would have done it long ago if I was, hon.” She said. “But that night I was in a bit of doubt, and due the awkwardness of the situation, I didn’t want to go home either. He said he had some money…which was enough to get us a room at…you know where we ended up.” She said, blushing deeply. Renji nodded in answer, as he and Akari, Niou’s on again, off again girlfriend at that point in time, had seen them both exit, together.

“It did look bad.” Renji said.

“I know it did.” Mizuko admitted. “But we were sheltered, and that was what mattered.” She said. “Would you like the missing pieces?”

“Might as well.” He answered, leaning back and wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Short or long version?” She asked. “Well, actually, both version are pretty short.” She admitted. “Basically, we got there, spent the first couple of hours buried in our respective homework, he offered to let me take a bath - and no, he didn’t peak once.” Mizuko smiled at that. “I crawled on the bed, slept a little. If I remember right, he’d been on the floor. We talked about some things, and he joined me on the bed. I don’t remember what led to it, but we shared a fairly deep kiss….” She paused in her story, watching for any sort of negative reaction from her current lover. “He did try to get a bit frisky, but I couldn’t bring myself to go that far. He accepted that, we cuddled, and then the next day started.”

“…That’s all?” Renji asked.

“I swear, that is all.” Mizuko promised him.

Renji thought for a moment. “I can see why Akari-san might have been angry. I guess she didn’t let him give his side.”

“You believe me?” Mizuko asked.

“You didn’t lie, did you?” Renji asked, stroking her hair. “I can’t imagine that you would want to not tell the truth about something like that. I know I’d be disappointed if you did.”

Mizuko smiled. “One hundred percent truth.” She paused, and sighed. “I do still wonder ‘what if?’ though.”

Renji thought about that for a moment, and chuckled..

“What’s so funny?” Mizuko asked.

“I just can’t see you and Niou together.” Renji said. “You’re not cunning enough for him.”

“I am for you though?” Mizuko said, pushing Renji down to the floor and straddling him.

“You’re perfect for me.” He said, his brown eyes twinkling up at her.

“What if the sex had been really good?”

“I guess we’ll never know now, will we? Besides, I’m you’re mine, and I’m yours.” Renji said, running his fingers through her hair. “I worried that whole night about you, but I knew you were safe. I don’t know how, but I knew that.”

“Aww….” Mizuko blushed and buried her head in his neck. “I just don’t want another study heavy time to make things stressful again.”

“I think we can manage to avoid that.” Renji grinned up at her. “We’ll just have to manage our time well, and make time for each other.”

“That sounds easy in theory.” Mizuko said.

“We’ll find a way to make it work.” Renji promised her.
