Bob stood silently at the head of the cloth-draped autopsy table, its occupant pale and worn beneath the cold, harsh illumination of the morgue’s neon lighting.

Lifting a hand, Bob tentatively reached out toward Harry’s supine form, his expression pensive.

How many times had he wished that he could offer this young man the simple solace of a hug or the reassurance of a fleeting hand upon a shoulder, only to be denied? Even worse, to know that any physical contact he might attempt would be painful and repellant.

Bob let his palm hover a hair’s breadth to the right of Harry’s face. Here now was his opportunity. This moment would be his last chance to physically touch one who had become such an integral part of his heart and soul; to convey his love and reassurance with more than words.

Yet he dared not.

Bob was acutely aware of the close scrutiny of Justin Morningway’s doppelganger. He could not risk even the slightest hint of concern or intimacy. If his plan was to succeed, he needed to remain aloof and distance himself from the yearning of his heart. If not, then Harry would surely die and all would be lost.

Bowing his head, Bob looked down upon the man he had come to love as a son. So close and yet destined to remain eternally distant.

Blinking back the threat of tears, he steeled himself and renewed his resolve. Instead of the longed for caress, Bob lightly slapped Harry’s face to wake him.

It was time to bring the drama to its inevitable conclusion.
