Help with Nook?

Dec 26, 2010 05:09

I don't know if this is the place to ask this, or if anyone here can help me, but I figured I should try. I recently recieved a Nook as a gift, and I'm having a lot of trouble where uploading PDFs of fanfic is concerned. Not the uploading itself so much, but rather in the fact of formatting. So, the fact is, yes, I can get felisblanco's The Doors of Time ( Read more... )

Oh dear. The problem is that, as far as I know, NO current eBook device (except maybe the Kindle DX) plays well with PDF natively. Reflow (which is where the conversion tries to logically break the text so it fits on the smaller screen) never really works because the PDF is pretty much a picture of text. The only PDFs that can be successfully reflowed to read is those that are formatted to a 'paper' size matching the display dimensions of your device. (This, BTW, is why I haaaate it when authors post a PDF of their work. Why not in epub/mobi/HTML? Is it because of the pretty pictures? ::mourns ( ... )

So it's a PDF issue! Good to know. *sigh* I'll definitely try Caibre and start converting to epub. Thank you!

What format does the Nook take? From a bit of research, I'm assuming it can handle epub okay, am I right? If do, then Calibre can convert a pdf to epub with no problems. I read in epub on my iphone, and I do all my conversions through Calibre. It's very easy to use - you don't have to be adept at computers. (I'm not particularly adept, myself.)

You can run Calibre on your PC, convert the books to a better format, then (presumably) send them to your Nook.

Oh, good. I need things in small, simple sentences for me to understand them where computer formatting is concerned, so if Calibre is very user friendly, all the better. Thanks for the help!

calibre is compatible with the nook, very much so, and you should get it. It's like magical candy book fixing magicness of love. I'm not sure that it will be the cure-all for a pdf, but it might help.

....Magical candy book fixing magicness of love you say? Indeed, I am intrigued. This description makes me feel as though it would solve all my problems.

we-llll, I LOVE my nook, like crazy mad love (even after seven months, it's still my happy-joy shiny tech thingy). And calibre made me love it even more, so...

Well, I specifically asked for the nook for Christmas, I really thought it was awesome so I'm really happy that I won't be having all sorts of troubles with it. :)

Please do not be scared of calibre! It is a fan-reader's best friend! I am also woefully computer illiterate, and believe me, if I can use it with ease, anyone can. Download it today! Your eReading life will get so much better.

PDFs suck on eReaders, sorry to say. You should really just convert them to epub rather than keep struggling to make them work on your nook. I don't know why people continue posting their works in them! Authors would do better to post their works on AO3 where we can do a one-click download to the format of our choice.

Then I feel so much better! I can rest assured that I can play around with my eReader and my files and I will eventually stumble into figuring out how to make my fanfic work for me. Goodness knows I was so confused. Thank you very much for the assurances!
