Ectaco Jetbook

Hi all! I was looking at e-readers and liked the specs on the Ectaco Jetbook. Mainly, I liked that it supports a whole bunch of different filetypes (mobi, epub, txt, html, rtf, etc.) and has an SD card slot for expanding the memory--and adding new reading material easily ( Read more... )

I don't have any experience with it personally, but when I was thinking of getting an e-reader, it was a choice between Jetbook and Astak EZRead. I went with Astak in the end, but I remember people praising Jetbook on the MobileRead forums in the "What to buy" thread. Ectaco has its own subforum on MR, so you can check what the users say.

thanks for the link!
I ended up getting the Jetbook, and while it's not as fancy as my hubby's Kindle, it handles several different file formats (basically, anything *except* Kindle files), including my Barnes & Noble e-books, and it displays pdf files far better than the Kindle. Plus, it was *very cheap*; I got it for $50 on NewEgg...

Don't have a Jetbook myself (I'm rocking a brand new Sony PSR-T1 which I adore!) but I thought I'd address your second question. If you like getting fic from some of the big archives (i.e. fanfiction.net, fictionalley.org, etc.) you can't go wrong with FLAG (http://www.flagfic.com/). Just put in the fic's number, and it spits out an epub that's ready to go. There's also Fanfiction Downloader (http://www.fanfictiondownloader.net/) but I haven't experimented with that one yet. I also love archiveofourown.org because you can download epubs of fic straight from their website ( ... )

thank you so much for the links!

I ended up buying the Jetbook because I caught a sale on NewEgg & got it for US$50.

My hubby's Kindle is my only local source of comparison: the Jetbook definitely isn't as fancy, or as fast, but it can take a variety of file formats, including my Barnes & Nobles e-books & pretty much everything *except* Kindle books. And, it can format pdf books/documents far better than the Kindle. My hubby, who reads a lot of pdf books, and was cursing his otherwise beloved Kindle, saw what my Jetbook could do and ordered one of his own. :D

I was also looking longingly at the Sony. I'm assuming from your comments that it's as awesome as it looks?

I quite like it! It does pdfs really well for a 6" ereader (text reflow, landscape mode, margin cropping, contrast alteration, etc.), which was important to me, because I have a lot of fics in pdf form. I occasionally miss being able to read html files, but Calibre converts html into epub easily, so it's not a big deal. And the pdf support totally makes up for it! My previous ereader claimed to support pdfs, but it was totally crap at it, making them pretty much unusable. So this was a big step up for me.

And yay, I'm glad the jetbook is working out for you! :-)
