There's two fic's that someone emailed me in .doc format years ago after the author took them off-line, and I would love to get a copy on my ereader as I find myself really struggling with reading long fics on my computer these days. Calibre said that "no suitable source format was found" when I tried to convert them from the original .doc format, ( Read more... )

That's very odd.

Maybe try (1) copying all text (Ctrl-A) from the Word file, (2) pasting that into a new Word document, (3) saving that new doc as a .docx file or (better still IMO) an .htm file before (4) converting it in Calibre to an e-book?

I should never post a comment right before rushing off to work :-P

The other commenters are right... Calibre hates the doc/docx format. RTF (rich text file) is the only doc-like format it accepts. You can easily resave a Word file as rtf, or open a new file in Word and Save As rtf.

That said, I prefer to do my editing/tweaking in Word and then save the file as htm. The filsize is smaller, and I fancy it converts more cleanly to ebook format too... although I could be wrong about that ;-)

It's not as customization as Calibre, but you might want to try using squee!books to turn the file into an ebook. It might work since it uses a different process to convert the doc.

I've had success with RTF files in Calibre, so I suggest just re-saving the doc file as RTF (Rich Text Format). Any decent text editing program (at least any that can open doc) should be able to save to RTF.
