I got charged (a very small fee, I can't even remember how much it was, now) when I up/downloaded documents through Amazon's service.

But--if you want to skip the Cloud option, and go with just dling them to the device, you can do that via the USB connection, and there's no charge.

I know using the "whisper" service comes with a fee, but I wasn't sure if the 3G used that or if it was something different. I could always just use the wifi, if it comes to that, but I just liked the thought of being able to download and delete stories at will, wherever I am. It's not a big deal, though. I just have to make to sure to stock up on fanfics I'd like to read when I have access to wifi.

Yeah, it probably was the Whisper thing, come to think of it. (I'm sorry I'm not being terribly helpful, ugh.)

Fanfics, oh yes. :) I'm happily, greedily using AO3's conversion for longer stuff, so there's always a nice supply of fanfic on my Kindle :)

You were helpful. I just was trying to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding your meaning. :)
