A/N: For Trishie’s challenge of Lana returning and Clark turning her down.
Sitting at his desk, Clark let the keys clack rhythmically under his fingers. His nose wrinkled over a particular sentence structure. Sighing, Clark shook his head, “I swear she makes it harder for me on purpose.”
“Wouldn’t be moaning there would you Smallville?” Lois said with a smirk on her face. “After all, a bet’s a bet.”
“I didn’t know that our bet would include correcting your misspelling of derogatory for the next month,” Clark handed Lois her copy which was covered in Clark’s pencil scribble.
Lois nodded slowly, “Huh, just like I misspelled it in that puff piece about ‘high fashion’.”
Clark came to the realisation as Lois dropped the paper on her desk that she was playing him. Lois picked up her coat and slipped it over her shoulders, “It sucks to lose, good thing I don’t do it very often.”
“’Night, Lois,” Clark smiled as Lois looked at him, smile in her eyes.
“Don’t worry, Clark, you’ll win won day,” Lois turned to leave but not before she stopped to tell him, “It just you know…won’t be me.”
“Against you? Or you in general?” Clark asked before he even clicked what had come out of his mouth.
Lois bit her bottom lip and then laughed, “You couldn’t handle a girl like me, Smallville.”
You’re probably right, Lois.

Clark hovered over the edge of the Daily Planet, his mind somewhere above the clouds as a dark figure approached him. Eyes closed, Clark took in a breath and a hand touched his own. Instinctually, Clark tried to ground himself but there was nothing beneath him, body turned he managed to grab on to the side of the Daily Planet roof. Clark grunted as his body made impact on the cold brick.
“Clark!”
Pulling his body up, Clark was speechless at the sight, “Lana?”
Lana looked what could only be called sheepish. Clark levitated himself onto the Planet roof. “Wow, you fly now?”
“Lana, what are you doing here?” Clark asked in disbelief, he had waited for the pain to come but nothing happened.
“I talked to some of Dr Grohl’s associates and after some digging they were able to help me,” Lana smiled painfully.
“Help you?”
“Get rid of the suit,” Lana turned her back to Clark, staring out over the expanse of Metropolis. “It was hard, living that life, saving people without you. It was lonely.”
Clark frowned, “So you came back because what? You were lonely?”
“Clark, I came back because… I miss you,” Lana’s eyes held hope but Clark just didn’t feel it.
“I asked you to stay, I asked you to let me help you…” Clark brushed his mouth unable to articulate his words.
Lana nodded, “I know, I was wrong… I shouldn’t have left. I should have fought for what we have.”
“Had.” Clark closed his eyes, the word sticking in his throat. Lana looked at him, her head tilting as she tried to understand. “You left and I moved on. I had to.”
“Moved on, it’s been a while since I heard those words,” Lana laughed cynically.
Clark touched Lana’s shoulder, turning her to him, “But this time they’re true. We were done, forever. Separated by the one thing that could kill me.”
Lana finally realised what Clark was saying or not saying, “You met someone else?”
“Not exactly,” Clark sighed, then folded his arms, “It’s complicated.”
“Lois.” Lana swallowed.
Clark tilted his head, “How…?”
“I saw the way you look at her at Chloe’s wedding, even before you saw me, I watched you…watching her,” Lana wiped her face, brushing away the tears that had fallen. “You were in love with her then weren’t you?”
Clark lived by the rule of honestly, “I don’t know. I cared about her and I felt something but now… it’s love. I love Lois.”
Lana nodded, “I’m happy for you, Clark.”
Clark wanted to reach out to Lana but there was nothing he could to fix her pain. He had moved on and he was happy and no matter what powers he had he couldn’t just make that materialise for Lana.
“I’m sorry,” Clark said honestly.
“Me too Clark,” Lana smiled softly. “I better go.”
“Where?” Clark asked, concerned.
“Don’t worry Clark, I can take care of myself,” Lana kissed his cheek before she left him alone on the roof.

Clark made his way back down to get this things so he could go home. He blinked a few times when he realised Lois was sitting at her desk.
“Lois?”
“Smallville, what are you still doing here?” Lois asked quizzically.
“Oh, I was on the roof. I like the quiet up there,” Clark replied before he sat back down at his desk.
Lois smiled, “Yeah, me too. I guess it reminds me of being on the farm, all that quiet.” Clark let out a deep breath, “Are you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Clark smiled, “Not a ghost, just goodbye.”
“Like that’s not at all cryptic,” Lois rolled her eyes.
“Maybe I’ll tell you about it one day,” Clark started to type, his key clacks in time with Lois’ as the two of them worked for the rest of the night, day and quite possibly their lives.
