It took Terence a few days to realize that Hermione wasn’t a woman that could easily be wooed. He took for granted all the times she had been there for him and the way she helped out of tough situations. He missed the scent of her perfume, the way she got dressed in the morning and the quirky ways she would eat certain things like toast. He showed up at the apartment when Hermione was at work and prepared them dinner, a gesture he hadn’t fulfilled in a while. It felt nice doing it, even though he was doing it with strings attached.

“What’s going on here?” Hermione asked the minute she walked through the door.

“Surprise,” Terence said, poking his head from around the corner. He was still in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on their meal.

“Get out of my home,” she replied calmly. She placed her purse down on the couch and started walking towards to kitchen to show him the way out.

“Come on! Have one last dinner with me. Please?”

“I owe you nothing.”

“I’m sorry for lying and cheating. Please give me another chance. I’ll prove to you that I’m not the scumbag you think I am. Please?”

“I did give you a chance. I knew for weeks about the girl you were sleeping with behind my back. I gave you a chance to come clean about it, but you never did. I dropped hints and gave you openings in our conversations, but nothing.”

“I’m not a mind reader.”

“I know. That’s why I’m telling you to leave, so there’s no confusion about what I’m saying to you. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea again.”

“You’ll never find someone who treats you the way I do, who understand you when you’re at your lowest, and knows just what to say.”

“That’s what I’m hoping.”
