It took weeks for the fear to change. Alicia didn’t think it was possible but her fear settled into jittery paranoia. Miles was patient the entire time she experienced this emotional upheaval, but Alicia couldn’t shake the feeling he was doing this more for himself than for her. She didn’t bring it up in conversation and she didn’t ask him what his intentions were. The last thing she needed was to deal with a defensive Miles. She had enough on her plate and she was attempting to downsize the responsibilities she had taken on so her life would be manageable.
Once she felt safe in her own skin she arranged to have lunch with Angelina and Katie. She needed the distraction and knew it was just the thing to make her feel like things were getting back to normal. The three young women hugged upon reuniting then took their seats.
“You look so much thinner than usual. Have you been eating?” Angelina asked; concern evident in her voice because of the emphasis on certain words.
Alicia shook her head. Angelina didn’t usually discuss weight because she knew it was a sensitive subject for Alicia. This demonstrated that the impact of the sexual assault had affected her physically and it bothered her to admit it. She knew about the psychological scars it left behind, but had overlooked the rest.
“I’ve been doing the best I can,” was Alicia’s reply.
Katie and Angelina continued to catch up with Alicia. They successfully made Alicia laugh once or twice throughout the conversation. An hour later they were parting ways and promising to see each other again soon. When Alicia arrived home Mile was still out on errands. Alicia thought this would be the perfect opportunity for a shower. The shower was the perfect way to end a productive day and it lifted her spirits considerably. She was considering cooking dinner for the first time in weeks. The minute she stepped out of the shower to reach for a towel she saw him. Instinctively she wrapped the towel tightly around herself.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” sneered Adrian as he grabbed her by the hair.
Alicia screamed as loud as she could. Adrian laughed. His laughter echoed throughout the bathroom and when juxtaposed with her screams sounded melodic and soothing.
"Let me go!"
"Your boyfriend won't save you this time," he hissed as he magically sealed all the windows and doors. No one was getting in or out of Miles and Alicia's apartment.
