For the next few days Miles talked to Angelina and Katie. He wanted to find out what Alicia liked and what he could do to win her over. Katie was reluctant to help him. She didn’t think he was good enough to be her best friend’s date, even if it was for one night. She thought Angelina and Miles should respect Alicia’s decision to go stag instead of insisting she be accompanied by someone. Angelina scoffed at her after yet another one of her lectures.
“If going to the Yule Ball alone is no big deal then why do you have a date?”
“Someone asked me and I happen to like said person. Is that so wrong?”
Angelina shook her head. It was obvious that she wasn’t going to convince Katie to see things her way. Later that evening Angelina told Miles where he could find Alicia. She was flying laps around the Quidditch Pitch. Night laps were one of Alicia’s favorite past times.
“What are you doing here? I’m not going to change my mind just because you decided to follow me all day,” Alicia said once she spotted Miles flying laps behind her.
He picked up the pace so they would be flying side to side and replied, “I wish you would give me a chance. Just because I’m in Slytherin doesn’t mean I’m a bad person, you know?”
“And I wish you would leave me alone, but obviously that’s not going to happen tonight. What do I have to do to convince you to leave me alone, let me go stag and find another date? Aren’t there any available Slytherin girls that would be interested in going with you?”
“There are but I’m not interested in going with them. I’m interested in going with you.”
“What’s so special about me? We’re always butting heads on the Quidditch Pitch. How will our interactions change if we decide to go to the Yule Ball together?”
“They probably won’t but what do you have to lose by going with me?”
“I thought the purpose of these events was to go with someone you like.”
“Exactly. That’s why I want to go with you.”
This comment made Alicia blush. She would be lying if she said that this revelation didn’t affect her. It did. Her face was flushed and she could feel the redness spreading to her ears. She picked up the pace because she didn’t want him to see how he affected her. She wished he would go away so this embarrassment would leave with him, but he wasn’t leaving and her wish wasn’t coming true anytime soon.
