Alicia didn't usually take her time getting ready for a date, but tonight was different. She knew it was going to be a special night. There were butterflies in her stomach, her hands were sweating and she could feel her heart racing - none of the other dates she'd been on made her feel this way. She didn't know what to expect this evening, but the guy she was meeting said very sweet things and he challenged her intellectually. He was mysterious and a little out of reach, but she was certain she knew him from somewhere.
Once Alicia ensured her make up and hair were perfect, the dress was flattering and the heels and purse complimented her outfit, she made her way to the restaurant. The minute she arrived the waiter took her to the table where her date was waiting for her already. She was very pleased about his punctuality. The minute Miles and Alicia's eyes connected there was instant recognition.
"You..." she said, puzzled and shocked that Miles was the man she had been exchanging messages with.
"Hello, beautiful."
"Is this a joke? You can't be my date."
"Why not?"
"It's just not possible. There's no way you can be that smooth and charming. There is just no way in hell that's even a thing."
"Sit down, would you? I'm sure you have a lot of questions and this is a date so you can ask them," he replied, motioning for Alicia to sit down. The waiter left them alone once he was sure Alicia was okay.
Alicia didn't know where to start. She was trying to work through her disbelief. Miles took this moment to order some wine for them and by the time it arrived Alicia was ready to talk. "First things first - did you know you were talking to me when we first connected?"
Miles nodded. He wasn't ready to speak yet, not until she asked more specific and complex questions. He hoped all of her questions weren't of the yes/no variety.
"Why did you talk to me then? We basically hated each other while attending Hogwarts and after we left some of our run ins were unsavory. It probably didn't help that you were with Marcus Flint at the time but still..."
"I talked to you because I was intrigued by you. I know we didn't know what we looked like when we connected and that was definitely part of the allure but as I learned more details about you, I knew who you were. I may have been vague in my answers about myself, but I did it because I knew that if you gave me a chance to be myself you'd see past the history we have together. I just wanted you to give me a chance and not dismiss me without at least going on one date with me."
"Typical Slytherin," was all Alicia could say. She decided to give him a chance and as the evening dragged on, she found herself genuinely enchanted by Miles. He was funny, insightful and the mean streak was tapered down but that didn't mean it had completely disappeared. She knew better than to hold onto such illusions.
When the date was over Miles walked Alicia home. He leaned in to kiss her goodbye by giving her a peck on the cheek, but she turned and their lips met instead. Miles wasn't expecting this so when they parted all he could say was, "Wow."
Alicia smirked. "Call me," was her only reply before she headed into her flat.
