Disclaimer: These characters are never mine.
Miles always considered himself to be ruthless. He considered himself selfish, stubborn and steadfast in his actions, beliefs and ensuring his words matched what he intended on doing on any given day. He worked hard for everything he had in life because he knew that nothing would be handed to him. He didn't expect the worse, but he also didn't expect to just be given opportunities. As a result when he wasn't busy busting down doors and making his way through the world, he was creating his own opportunities which included fighting his way through Slytherin and rising through the ranks at the Ministry. He never suspected the least likely of people would be in his way. He never thought the day would come he would have such an easy time taking someone down.
Alicia was feistier than he gave her credit for. She knew how to play rough and didn't give people a chance to think twice before delivering another blow. She would be lying if she said she wasn't nervous about this promotion. She knew there was a chance that the Ministry was looking to fill this position with someone from another department, but she felt she was the best candidate for the job. No one was more passionate about international law than her. She interviewed for the job and felt good about how things went until she saw that Miles was the person being interviewed after her. This ruffled her feathers and made her determined to show him she wasn't someone to be messed with. She was just as vicious and determined as any Slytherin.
For the next few days both did everything they could to gain the advantage over the other. Miles was impressed that Alicia went as far as she did. Brow nosing wasn't beneath either of them, but what surprised him was that Alicia made him late to work once or twice because they happened to be trying to catch the same elevator and she made sure she closed the doors on him before he could get on. She also messed up his order at lunch and made sure to do other things to make his days difficult. He didn't know if this was pay back for those nasty comments he had made to her on the Quidditch pitch at Hogwarts during their youth, but it sure felt like it.
"I'll never underestimate you again," he told her when she ultimately received the job over him.
She smiled and said, "Good. You shouldn't have from the beginning. Just because I was in Gryffindor doesn't mean I'm not as cunning as you, Mr. Slytherin."
Miles liked seeing this side of her. He had pegged her a goody two shoes all those years ago and these past few days redeemed her in his eyes. It was a strange twist of fate, but he could definitely feel an attraction for her grow because of these intense interactions. He didn't like having his ass handed to him, but she did it with grace, style and a hint of sass. She could pass for Slytherin.
