Summary: Miles and Alicia don't click on the first date, but all isn't lost.

Miles asked for a lot in a partner. He wanted looks, intelligence, flexibility, ambition, determination, and above all else cunning that matched his own. He was beyond demanding on the fact he wanted the woman he shared his life with to have all these traits, he was borderline difficult to please. It was all or nothing in his mind. This turned off many dates and he wouldn't get past the first date. He didn't care. He had high standards and wouldn't change that just so he could settle for second best. He knew the perfect woman was out there for him, but it would take some diligence and time to find her. He was patient so he had no problem waiting.
Then he met Alicia. They didn't click at all. Anyone watching their first date would've thought it had been a disaster and when it was over they didn't kiss goodbye or even hug. An awkward handshake was exchanged and that's all that happened between them. A week went by and neither thought to reach out to the other. They weren't interested in going on another date, not if it was going to be as dull as the last one.
In an interesting turn of events they bumped into each other while both were on dates with other people. Alicia had this allure to her that Miles didn't see when they were together and Miles had a gentlemanly charm to him that made Alicia think twice. She was showing off her skills at various card games by beating the guys around her at poker, blackjack and gin rummy. Miles knew she was competitive, but had no idea she was cunning too. Miles impressed her by caring for his date and being polite. Alicia watched as he pulled out chairs, made her laugh with his jokes and taught her how to play pool at the bar they were at.
Once their dates were over both Miles and Alicia proceeded to talk to each other. At first they didn't know what to say but Miles spoke first. "I think we started off on the wrong foot."
"You're right. Do you want to try again?"
"I would like to, but I have my concerns."
"What can we do about that?"
Miles and Alicia spent the next few hours playing pool, card games and drinking a few firewhiskeys. It wasn't the view they had of each other at first, but it was budding into something more, something real and they both wanted to see where this would go. There were no expectations and that's what made it special.
