Most people have interesting stories about how they met their best friend, but not Miles. He and Adrian met on the Hogwarts Express in their first year. Both were looking for somewhere to sit and ultimately decided to sit across from each other in the train. From then on they made it a point to sit close to each other because of the sense of familiarity. Most people in their house had some past history, but Miles made it a point to be different. He didn't have any ties to Death Eaters, his family wasn't very wealthy and he definitely didn't believe in blood purity and pureblood supremacy. Yes, he was a pureblood but he liked treating people respectfully.
Over the years they learned a lot about each other, including the type of girls they liked. During their fifth year Adrian caught Miles staring at Alicia. He didn't think anything of it until he noticed that it was a stare of longing and curiosity. He hadn't seen Miles look at anyone like that before, which fascinated him.
"Why don't you ask her out?" he asked Miles one day.
"Ask who out?"
"Don't play stupid. I can see you're looking at Alicia."
"I'm not usually self-conscious and you know how much confidence I have approaching most girls. There's something about her that gets me tongue tied and I can't find the words to express myself the way I want to."
"That's pretty pathetic. Now man up and do it," Adrian said, pushing Miles in Alicia's direction.
Miles wasn't the type of person to give into peer pressure so he resisted. Adrian took this as a challenge. So the next time the two of them passed Alicia and her friends in the hall, he lightly shoved Miles into Alicia.
"Oops, sorry," she replied, thinking she was to blame for the mishap.
Miles didn't approve of Adrian's methods but he struck up a conversation and the nerve to ask her out. The date went so well that they started to see each other more frequently. He was grateful that Adrian had started this because now he had a girlfriend and he was happy.
"I may not agree with your tactics, but I do have to thank you for helping me. You're more than my best friend, you're like a brother to me. I appreciate you more than some of my own relatives, my own blood but that's fine because it's my understanding that blood doesn't make you family in every instance," he explained.
"I'd annoy you more if we were related," Adrian replied with a smirk on his face.
