Miles Bletchley will never admit to anyone that he was physically, emotionally and mentally abused as a child and that it only stopped when his mother died. His father had never been a part of his life. The dysfunction of his family was apparent from the beginning. While at Hogwarts he was afraid of people finding out how bad his family life was. He saw shame in it and constantly blamed himself for his parents' actions.
It wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that once Miles grew into a teenager he would be resentful towards adults. He never had any trustworthy adults around him until Severus Snape took it upon himself to reach out to the boy; he was a Slytherin after all. To this day Severus never got Miles' complete trust. At one point Miles harbored admiration towards Severus that turned into a small crush, but this eventually died once he realized it could never be.
His sexual confusion added to his anger once he reached his early 20's. By then he was out of Hogwarts, away from Severus and thrust into Alicia Spinnet's life. Alicia lived in the apartment below him and would go up to his apartment to see what was going on with Miles. Usually she needed an excuse. Once she got into the habit of it, however, things changed.
Their friendship grew and they began to trust each other with secrets. Alicia opened her heart up completely to him. It was always a bad habit of hers to open up to people too soon. It always got her in trouble. Miles wasn't affected by this. He continued to let himself be haunted by his past and this had a huge impact on his future. Not that Miles believed he had a future.
One night Alicia heard weird noises coming from Miles' apartment. She decided to check on him because she was worried. Upon entering the apartment the noises got louder, but nothing had registered in her mind about what could be going on. When she opened Miles' bedroom door, she saw him in a compromising position with Adrian Pucey.
"GET OUT!" Miles barked.
Alicia's eyes went wide before she slammed the door shut before her. She didn't go to Miles' apartment for a week. During this time Miles was trying to figure out how to tell Alicia he wasn't gay, he was bisexual. He was also trying to figure out why he had felt so bad. Did he like Alicia? He gathered up enough courage and went to her.
"I understand. You don't need to explain anything to me," she said.
"Why are you so good to me?"
"I'm sure I'm not the only one."
Miles bit his bottom lip at this comment. He wouldn't crack. He wouldn't tell her his secrets. He had made up some along the way and she had discovered one on her own, but he could never truly admit to any secrets.
Alicia received a visitor a few days later. It was Adrian Pucey. He wanted to invite Alicia to join Miles and himself. Alicia politely declined and she thought he accepted this, but she was wrong. For the next week Adrian would come to her apartment, trying to convince her to join them in their sexual adventures, but Alicia wanted no part in it. She cared for Miles, but couldn't see herself sharing him with someone else. By the end of the week Adrian was becoming violent and she was fearing for her life.
The first time Adrian Pucey hit her she stumbled back and fell over her own feet. As he stood over her and yelled at her, she could feel tears welling up in her eyes. She nodded or shook her head when he asked her anything because she was afraid to talk. When she told Miles about his lover's actions, he grew enraged and hit her as well.
"How dare you talk about Adrian that way? Next time you tell me something bad about him, I'll knock your teeth out. He tried to warn me about you ever since you walked in on us."
"I fear for your safety Miles. Doesn't that mean anything?"
Miles leered at her. She knew she couldn't win so just accepted Adrian's invitation to make them both happy. She thought she wouldn't be abused anymore. She was sacrificing her own happiness in the process.
After one night with the two of them, she realized she was living a lie. She didn't care about Adrian. She loathed him. So why was she giving him her body? To make Miles happy. If Miles was her friend why would he force her into something like this? He was unknowingly forcing her to do this through Adrian.
"I won't do this anymore. I love you Miles, but I can't."
"Are you sure you want to lose me like this?"
"If losing you means gaining my dignity then I make this decision gladly."
Miles was hurt and Adrian didn't like this. He neared Alicia and began to shake her violently back and forth. His eyes were full of rage. Miles was afraid, but wouldn't stop Adrian.
"Listen to me, you whore. You don't have any rights here. You're going to continue giving us your body because we own you now. We'll lock you in your home if we have to. Either that or do this willingly," he sneered.
"Sod off!" she yelled, as she shoved him away.
Adrian swung at her. The punch connected with her face. Her nose broke and blood came forth. Then they left her there bleeding and would only return to have sex with her. They raped her a few times before Alicia decided enough was enough. She knew striking back would get her nowhere. She had already acquired plenty of injuries trying to do just that. That's when she decided to end her own life. She was found by Angelina Johnson and Katie Bell, who were visiting from out of town and wanted to see how their friend was doing. She had hung herself over the bed she was raped in. To this day no one would know why she did it, but Miles and Adrian. A little while after Alicia's death, Adrian was thrown into Azkaban for Death Eater related activities. He was falsely accused of something he didn't do. This tore Miles apart. Especially since he was the one involved with Death Eaters and not Adrian.
Now Miles had two more secrets to add to his list.
