Alicia waited for death, but it wouldn't come. She didn't understand what she had done wrong. She had taken the pills, but they had no effect. She cut her wrist, but it hadn't caused much blood to come out. She considered throwing herself out a window, but what was the point in that. Nothing else had worked. How could she be sure that would?
Miles rushed to her aid when he noticed the blood. He had walked past her, an insult ready, but he wouldn't use it. Not once he saw the state she was in. She looked terrible and her mood was reflected in her face. He tried to coax her into telling him something, but she wouldn't give up her silence. She wouldn't let it go. She wanted to feel the pain because she felt she deserved it.
He hugged her, but she was unmoved. He explained what he had been through because of his parents, but in her mind it didn't compare to her own experiences. She was getting colder now.
Finally the medicine is working, she thought.
He gently shook her. "Are you feeling all right?"
She smiled at him. If only you knew what I did, she thought.
The smile concerned him. He didn't know she was willing to sacrifice herself to stop the pain. She couldn't understand that someone could help her. It wasn't a matter of not getting help. It was a matter of letting someone help you. That's what she struggled with. In a moment she would realize her mistake and want the help. In a moment her life would change.
