It's my turn! This is such a fun idea, and I've been loving all the recs. My own come mainly from two fandoms, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. I've tried not to repeat any stories that others have recommended.
1. Rilla. Not only was Rilla one of the first authors I read, and not only did she suck me in to the world of fanfiction, but I've been able to watch her writing get even better over the five years I've known her. I still remember reading her multi-chapter "Bitter Hearts," the first SS/HG story I came across, and she has so many wonderful stories, but today I am rec'ing two short tales that blew me out of the water.
Slice of LifeNC-17
Charlie/Neville
Summary: It's ridiculous, really, for a twenty year-old man to be traipsing all over England in search of someone who can heal an injured toad, but it means something to Neville.
2.
Descent by Rilla
R
Arthur Weasley/Hermione Granger
Just read it. It's stunning.
3.
Hinge of Fate by Ramos
Rated M
HG/SS
Summary: Hermione cannot remember, and Severus cannot forget.
There are so many elements to this tale that could have been done so wrong, but Ramos did it all so right. This novel-length stunned me when I read it years ago, and a recent re-reading proved to me that it really was that good.
4.
The Tao of Diogenes by The Treacle Tart
Rated M
RW/SS
Summary: The war is finally over and two veterans meet again…for the very first time.
The Treacle Tart has a wealth of fantastic stories archived. It's like a treasure chest, and you can guarantee you'll find a gem with every pick. This one has stuck with me ever since I read.
5.
The Beguiling by Zagzagael
Rated T
Summary: How Albus Dumbledore's life was affected by allowing Hermione Granger use of a time turner during her Third Year.
This is unbelievably gorgeous and haunting. I think I wanted to smash my own keyboard after reading it. Just go.
6. Vulgarweed SS/HG. The series I am rec'ing begins with
Ravenous, and there are five tales so far that have me in full swoon every (multiple) time I read them. Just brilliant.
7.
Jewel of the Nile by Anna.
HG/SS, HG/BW
I think Anna has been rec'd here already. The series begins with Roman Holiday, which began with one of my pet peeves and yet somehow didn't turn me totally off. And then utterly entranced me as it went along. There is something about Anna's characterizations and the way she turns a phrase that is intoxicating. This second story, novel-length, is probably my favorite. Be prepared to lose a lot of time when you can't walk away.
8.
Broken Ravens and the Art and Science of Regret by Bloodcult of Freud
Rating: S-MT
Molly Weasley/SS
Summary: Sometimes a man is defined more by what he's lost than by what he's gained.
Bloodcult of Freud is most known for Tyger! Tyger!, which I also love, but this short story is a real stunner and one not to be missed. *fangirl flail*
9.
Momento Mori by djarum99
PG13
Jack/Elizabeth
Djarum99 has several series, and I can heartily recommend them all. (And they can all be found in a post/list of her fic on her LJ, yay!) This particular short story is a great example of how she weaves a web of Jack and Elizabeth that clings long after you've read it.
10.
Off the Edge of the Map by Penknife
Jack/Elizabeth
Penknife has so many great stories, it was hard to pick one for this rec. Enjoy!
11.
Birdsong by Orange_Crushed
Jack/Elizabeth/Will
So fantastic. Yes. Read.
12.
Gold by Writing_Samsara
NC-17
J/E
Writing_Samsara has a ranging series of ficlets that span at least a decade of time between Jack and Elizabeth, and they are all both sharp and dreamy. Never uncomplicated, the relationship she writes between them is one that is endlessly fascinating and wrenching. Don't miss it.
13.
Letters Home by Penknife
The Secret Garden!
Summary: Colin/Dickon(/Mary), set in WWI. Colin can't help wondering how this will end.
Brilliant. Moody. Cutting. Entirely befitting the strange circle the characters make and how I imagine them as adults. Yes.
Ok, I hope you enjoy these stories. I know I did.
