Just a Short Drabble

This is just a short little something that has been on my mind lately.

It usually began with quiet whimpers and sobbing groans, but she never let on that she heard them. She would simply pretend to be sleeping, until she heard the inevitable quick gasp for air as his hand would automatically shoot to his thigh, rubbing furiously at the mangled mass that was once healthy muscle. By that time, she could pretend she was just waking up, just becoming aware of his pain. He would grudgingly accept her offer of gentle massage, while dry swallowing bitter tasting pills. Slowly, the pain would subside, and he would fall back onto the pillows, a long sigh of relief signaling she could stop. It was in those moments that she felt she could almost see into his soul, his eyes expressing his thanks in ways he could never manage, as he pulled her down and into his arms. Her head against his chest, she could hear the steady beating of his heart as she waited for sleep to overcome him once more. Feeling his fingers slide gently over her back, she heard a quiet, whispered confession.

“I love you, Allie.”
