At first I wrote "I find I don't have much to add about Franky and Usopp - not right now, at least" before going on to still say plenty of stuff in my usual rambling fashion, so never mind that. ;)
A good while back on my journal - maybe even back in 2009, I forget - me and aqua_karen discussed the difference between Franky's first appearance and pretty much all his later ones, but it was more trying to get Franky than dealing with the Usopp side of this. Anyway, I don't think there's anything in this essay that feels off to me

YES. That is an excellent example. A few seconds later and it's like it never even happened.
And I actually know just what you mean about not forgetting what Franky did. I've yet to really write it into anything, but I once upon a time thought about doing something that dealt with him being guilty. Thennn. Well, I got writer's block and that was that. I think that a lot of fans have that feeling about it, though.
...while I may sometimes grumble fangirlishly in comparing him to the other Strawhats...

Yeeeeees! This illuminates a lot of things that I felt vague about, since I haven't gotten through Water 7/Enies Lobby/Thriller Bark and only know the basic outline of what happened during those arcs (much sadness...).
The whole connection of his mother to the "I'm useless" bit really resonates with me... I'd been wondering if that had a possible source other than his negativity, and that makes such perfect sense.
This entry is SO memory'd! Will help me out with my writing immensely, methinks.
