I have my computer back. Well sort of. I have it back but its keyboard isn't fixed. So I don't have a t or a g key. You cannot grasp how weird it is. It breaks all my automation. I do stuff, but it's really hard to type at length. The parts are in the mail. I hope they get here soon or else I shall surely go mad from these shennanigans ( Read more... )

As far as I can tell Dreamwidth is an open source LJ clone currently in beta, and you get one by paying(25/40$ a year, currently)

Well, it was developed "by fans, for fans", basically -- but the fans who developed it are people who used to actually work for LJ (at least some of them), and as far as I can tell from spectating, they have been very intelligent about it. That is, it's not a pipe dream to them. They wouldn't have started it if they didn't feel it was sustainable. One of their main reasons was all the messes with LJ over the past few years, and the problem that LJ is such a big business, that it could do whatever it wants. It keeps getting sold on, sometimes to people who are very dumb (6apart), sometimes to people who are somewhat suspect (SUP). They could very well decide "let's change this so that it's MySpace!" and what could LJ users do about it? The owners don't really care about "fandom", because the fans who use LJ are a really tiny proportion of the overall users, and demographically, we aren't necessarily what they "want". Plus, some folks got worried during Strikethrough about LJ's owners deciding to ban fannish content ( ... )

I know I sound like a strong DWJ partisan. :) I do know some of the folks who have developed it. It strikes me as their having done a good job so far, although I haven't had time or energy to really explore it yet. I understand WHY, and can see their reasons. I think they're pretty good reasons, although I am not *currently* scared about LJ going away or becoming untenable. And I want to see how DWJ does over the next year or so, whether it proves as sustainable as JF, for example. (But it's nice knowing that its developers really gave those things serious thought ( ... )

You can interview me, sure. And you need an invite code for Dreamwidth, or to pay for an accout - I can email you an invite if you give me your email, yo.

OH SQUEE thanks so much, I really will write you Moffat/Miles porn if you want me to. Right now I'm waiting on approval on the questionnaire from my advisor, but I'll probably have a specially-locked entry for it in a couple of days when I'm ready to roll including an in-depth explanaion of what the whole research thing is about. I assure you it's Oppressive Fen sympathetic though.

Um, if you've to any codes to spare? I dunno? All the cool kids are doing it? I'm a lofmanythings@gmail.com if you feel like it, but don't feel obligated or anythin. I'm just kind of confused by this development.

I can safely say I do not want Moffat/Miles porn. :P

Have emailed thingie. It's quite nice. I'm not moving or anything but fandom seems to think It Is Good and such and I wanted to be Cool, obv.

Dreamwidth is apparently an LJ clone that a lot of people are saying it's "what LJ could have been," meaning if LJ were not run by a corporation only out for money. The biggest thing people keep citing is that there's no "friends list," it's been renamed to something like "allowed" (to read you) and "subscribed" (journals that you read). Which is a big enough deal to some people to want to switch.

A lot of people are also simply running over there and grabbing their prefered journal name "just in case" the owner/operators of LJ decide to start kicking puppies in their spare time and makes everyone want to bail.

That seems to be the bulk of it, from what I can tell. It seems to be the same stink (though perhaps a bit bigger) that was made about GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal and DeadJournal and JournalFen.
