THERE IS A FANDOM FOR EVERYTHING. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.
But srsly. iCarly gets over six million views each episode. There's no surprise that some percentage of that wants in on the two Epic Het Ships (discussed above) or the HUGE LES YAY of Sam/Carly... amongst a ton of other ships.
I barely watch TV anymore either, but I admit, I used to watch iCarly fairly regularly back when I had access to an actual TV (thanks for existing, Hulu). I watched a lot of kiddy shows, finding that iCarly was Nick's best, at the time. I haven't seen this episode, but from what you write... I don't want to. I just think back on one episode where the show had really nailed the progression of a board game (a generic HedBanz, if you were curious), even if they exaggerated it for comedic effect... Feeling that they were Doing It Right warmed me to the show. But now... Ugh. For shame, iCarly. You were better than that, or so I thought.
I don't really watch live-action kiddy shows (I'm a cartoon/anime fan through-and-through), but when my niece is over, she watches the tween shows she so enjoys, and I'll occasionally watch/overhear it.
Don't do it. Leave that awesome bubble of memory alone in your mind. This... this was really a HUGE hiccup on account of Dan S. and the iCarly team. From what the fans said over at the discussion post, iCarly wasn't as good as it was before... but this episode took it to a whole other level by being so insulting of a dedicated fanbase. UGH. You just don't do that. :(
(Pssssssh no prob about the length thing. It's all good.)
I totally understand your point about trying to represent EXTREME tinhatters and their craziness. Hell, I understand the wtf of !!!tinhats since I'm in a rpf fandom and I've been to a panel where shipping was hinted at and it made things awkward for me (luckily, Jon Stewart is amazing and handled it beautifully).
The thing is, even then, there are problems. Not everyone is like that in the rpf/tinhat world, and fuck it if we would EVER seriously do that. It shows a complete removal from what fandom is truly like, and it's just unfair. We are, in general, a decently mature bunch who understand the Rules of Conduct, especially when we are dealing with real people or the actors of the characters we ship. But... it also goes into how fandom acts overall, simply because it is the only time you really, really see it. It gives the wrong impression on fandom, a minority in viewership that is CONSTANTLY getting slack from every which direction. Considering how much fandoms love
( ... )
Kinda makes me mad when they do that, since most fans are not like that at all, but I think that for a show like that (aimed at tweens, if I'm not mistaken) it's all about cheap laughs and easy humour. Maybe if I was in the fandom, I'd care more.
Wow, that is really awful. I hate when creators do stuff like that. I'm in the Supernatural fandom and the script writers pull crap like that sometimes too. Sam/Dean (the two brothers) are the biggest ship in the SPN fandom and the writers put in jokes about how creepy and weird fans are for shipping that.
Honestly, when writers do that they're basically insulting people who are paying their show a compliment. If someone is invested enough in your work that they care about the characters and have fun shipping them, then it's extremely rude to belittle them. Way to repay their love with your contempt. FAIL.
Wow, that's awful of the Spn writers. I mean, yeah, it's a bit surprising to make such a huge fandom's go-to-ship be incest, but that's the business of fandom, not to you. I mean, I get hugely annoyed when certain ships become canon... but even then, it's the creators' job to concern themselves about that. Even poking fun of crushes and past/current/future relationships can be alright... but as a means to advance the plot/to promote character development/to have some fun. NOT to make fun of your fans. NEVER EVER EVER to make fun of your fans.
