so. there will a catholic service at the mortuary on monday. i have no idea what this entails. i don't know what i think. my father is short-tempered. i don't know how i am. it seems easiest to drift, letting my instincts serve as a buffer, an emotional wall of no-feeling safely cushioning me from my nazgul ( Read more... )

Lets see...Catholic services, are probably a lot like other services, at least every service for people who weren't Catholic has been much the same, though you're likely to get incense. Smells and Bells, to quote one of the priests at the church we used to go to.

I've never been to ANY dead-person service. Tell me what I might expect.

though smells and bells makes me giggle.

I think my family are catholic. The rev says a few words, we have a hymn from the hymn books, vicar says some words again, sometimes reads out what's been written by somebody close to the deceased, or sometimes somebody will get up and read something out, then another hymn and the lord's prayer. Both the ones I went to were cremations, so as the rev said a final few words a curtain closed around the coffin *nods* but I don't recall if you said they were being buried or cremated I'm afraid.
After that we went out, the rev thanked us for coming on the way out and the closest to the deceased went around thanking everybody. We went to look at the wreaths that had been collected, then we went back for a little meal at a local pub (but i don't think everybody does the afterparty thing)

My grandmother is being cremated. *nods*

Thank you SO much this was incredibly helpful. It's nice to have a general idea of what to expect when I go. *snugs*
