How could the writers do that????

Well - here, a quote from the great Gene Roddeneberry (no, there is no way that any of us in any fandom could NOT know that name!) to the great Isaac Asimov (please oh please oh please don't ask who that is) on the difference between 'fact' and 'television writing'.

Roddenberry's comments are interesting, but I don't think that his descriptions regarding putting a show on the air can be ones that pertain to all shows. I used to follow Joe Malozzi's blog, and he'd update about the status of ideas and scripts and filming, etc. for SG: Atlantis and then Universe. They would quite often re-name an episode, but they'd pretty much have the first half of the season plotted out and a good portion of the scripts written (granted, not in final form) months ahead of the filming. I suspect that one of the issues for Star Trek also was that it was a new type of show, and many of Roddenberry's blanket statements and comments were due to its novelty. It's fantastic to think about how far science fiction television has come, to the point that we have a science fiction channel (and a science channel!)

A time machine would be awesome, wouldn't it? Though we'd probably have Ellison's "City on the Edge of Forever" issue and not be able to change anything. *g*
