The whole thing with my father this past week has been insane. Over the last year he's gradually become someone that I've never in my life met. It's as though all of his good characteristics have vanished, all his bad characteristics have been heightened and he's gained several more

I'm really sorry. Your relationship with your dad sounds, at the very least, complicated and confusing. Sometimes we have to let the people we love hit rock bottom before they realize the harm that they are doing. Of course, the risk in that is that 1) they will continue hitting rock bottom and still fail to see the error of their ways or 2) hit rock bottom and never recover.

That is exactly why it has been so agonizing for me to let go. On top of realizing his distructive behavior could seriously harm him, he has been threatening suicide since I was probably about 12 years old. It started out with 'life just isn't worth this' to saying he would find a gun and kill himself b/c he hated his life.

When I did finally stop speaking with him, he sent Rick text messages that he was just going to kill himself now. With what he's going through and his reactions to everyone, I don't see much potential in him rethinking his life.
