*claps hands with glee* What a great story! There's so much to love here I hardly know where to begin.
The top of his head barely reached the wizard’s belt, and perched on his silky hair was a tiny version of a scholar’s cap.
What fabulous imagery! How could Faramir be any more adorable? Or Gandalf any more amusing, and bemused?
“We must go through Poetry and Ballistics to get to the lower archive.”
“That sounds like a highly dangerous course, but I have great faith in my guide,” the wizard said as he hurried after him. Faramir walked quickly, almost at a trot, and at times he bounded ahead then circled back to wait for the wizard.
Omigosh, now he's Faramir-as-a-golden-retriever-puppy! You did find a way to make him even more adorable!
“It smells like words here,” Faramir told him, and the darkness of the archive seemed to lessen at the sound of his voice. Ok, all kidding aside, I had to catch my breath here, because this is just perfect. All Faramir's youthful love of lore, and brightness and energy and joy he radiates just

Faramir-as-a-golden-retriever-puppy Aieee! Best review comment ever! He is herding wizards. You know that Gandalf is trying not to burst out laughing during most of this fic. He isn't used to being around children, and especially not children like Faramir (and Boromir). He has spent hundreds of years searching and waiting in dark places, so I think he would be touched by Faramir's innocence and also by his mortality. Thank you for continuing offer encouragement to me and to many other writers. (Your comments are often more insightful than anything I could ever write!)
SQUEE! I was offline yesterday evening, so I just finally got the chance to read this, and I adore it! In addition to the other bits mentioned above, I particularly like Gandalf's flash of sympathy for Denethor, and Faramir's cleverness in finding the scroll. It's a perfectly delightful story, and I'm delighted to receive it!
Thank you so much! Don't you suspect that, in earlier times, Gandalf and Denethor had a less adversarial relationship? When the wizard shows up in Minas Tirith in ROTK, he is received like an old friend or at least a trusted ally. But by that time, both of them were short on patience, and it shows in how they treat each other. I am glad that you liked this!
Yes, I've always thought that Denethor's relations with everybody in ROTK are much more adversarial than usual--and I see from your response to Lilan below that you agree, at least about Faramir. I don't suppose there was ever perfect trust between Denethor and Gandalf, but I think there was willingness to work together and even respect on both sides.
