Summary: Songfic. You Must Love Me form Evita. Lyrics in bold.
Where do we go from here?
This isn't where we intended to be
We had it all, you believed in me; I believed in you.
Certainties disappear
What do we do for our dream to survive?
How do we keep all our passions alive as we used to do?
Brian knew Justin going to New York was the right thing, he just didn’t know how he was going to survive it. He had told Justin it didn’t matter, it was only time. Was it; and how much time was too much? Could they be apart for so long there was no returning?
Things had become so clear after the bombing. He couldn’t live without Justin; he wanted him in his life, for the rest of his life. Brian began solidifying the shaky foundation they had formed. He proposed, twice, bought them a house, Justin’s dream country manor. But now…
Deep in my heart, I’m concealing
Things that I’m longing to say
Scared to confess what I’m feeling...
Frightened you'll slip away
You must love me
You must love me
Brian never believed in love, but here he was loving Justin more than he ever thought possible. Most thought Brian heartless and fearless, but his heart was breaking and he was scared to death he’d lose Justin forever.
As they made love for the last time for who knows how long, Brian wanted to beg Justin to stay. Tell him he’d been wrong, that he could paint in Pittsburgh, offer him anything to stay, but he remained silent. The words just wouldn’t come. He knew Justin would stay, and he feared Justin would eventually resent him if he didn’t take this chance, if he didn’t give his dream a shot.
Brian had taken a chance on love. He loved Justin, and knew Justin loved him. He had to believe it was enough to help them survive the separation. They had to survive.
Why are you at my side?
How can I be any use to you now?
Give me a chance, and I’ll let you see how
Nothing has changed!!
Friends and family gathered at Britin to celebrate Brian and Justin finally getting married. Brian watched as Justin walked up the path to meet him, and as he came closer, Brian wondered how they had gotten here. How had they been able to keep their relationship together, keep their love alive? It had not been an easy five years, so many lonely nights, tearful phone calls because they had missed each other so much.
When Justin returned he was so excited to be back, but some of Brian’s deeply buried insecurities came to the surface. Justin had to fight to convince Brian that he was still the only one that made him hard on sight. Brian was the only one Justin ever wanted and needed, as much as he needed air to breathe.
Deep in my heart, I’m concealing
Things that I’m longing to say
Scared to confess what I’m feeling...
Frightened you'll slip away
You must love me
You must love me
You must love...me
Brian still marveled at Justin’s love, never questioning that he did love him, just the why. Now, here they were pledging their love in front of everyone. It was just a public acknowledgement of something they had privately done already.
“You may now kiss your husband.” The minister had said.
Brian cupped Justin’s face, tears shining in both their eyes; he knew this was all that ever mattered. His Sunshine and their love would see them through anything life threw at them. They would survive.
