tamingthemuse Prompt 139-Bemused
Glorfindel sat in the Hall of Fire completely bemused. The evening crowd long since gone, he sat with an empty goblet in his hand, staring at the fireplace that was empty and cold. That was one thing Glorfindel missed about the wintertime. He enjoyed the warmth and comfort of a glowing fire. The nightmares of his death and fall of his beloved Gondolin that a fire used to cause him were a thing of the past and no longer haunted him.
Now he sat in silence, confused. How could he have been so wrong? How could he have misinterpreted Erestor’s advances? Maybe they were not advances at all, Glorfindel mused and shook his head; of course they were advances. For months the dark elf had been sending him come hither looks, endearingly shy smiles, and engaging him in conversations. The advisor seemed to always be where Glorfindel was. It could not have all been coincidence.
Sighing deeply, he rose and set his goblet on a tray; looking around the hall, he wondered when all his companions left. He vaguely remembered seeing Erestor leave, followed by Elrond, but he did not remember saying good night to anyone else. He slowly walked down the corridor that would lead to his room. As Glorfindel walked he thought about Erestor, his dark hair, pale creamy skin, those deep brown eyes that were so full of wisdom and a little bit of mischief. What he loved most about Erestor was his easy friendly smile that was framed by perfect lips.
Glorfindel stopped and recalled his last thought. What he loved about Erestor…loved…loved. He loved Erestor? Yes, he did…he loved Erestor. When had that happened? If he was honest with himself he had to admit he had always found Erestor attractive, but they became fast friends upon his return, and neither made any advances towards the other, until recently. Neither lacked for partners to warm their beds, but that was all their companions were. Glorfindel never felt the desire to deepen any relationship, but lately he had found himself thinking more and more about wanting something with more meaning than simply finding release. Perhaps that is why he found Erestor’s advances so appealing. He was in love with Erestor. Though tonight when he had asked Erestor to come back to his room, the dark elf had refused without an explanation.
Glorfindel continued the slow walk to his room. Perhaps he had been wrong, a thought that caused his heart to ache. As he approached his room, he noticed light coming from under his door. He did not remember leaving a candle burning. He opened the door to find a fire burning in his fireplace, the balcony doors open to allow the heat to slowly escape and the cooler spring air inside, and there on his bed sat the cause of his confusion and the object of his desire. His heart sped when he noticed Erestor was nude, barely covered with the sheet. Staring into the dark eyes, reflecting the glow of the fire, Glorfindel was speechless.
“I hope you do not mind,” Erestor said, motioning to the fire. “I know winter has past us now, but I also know how much you love sitting before the fire.”
Glorfindel smiled, “I do not mind.” Neither moved closer, each trying to appraise the situation. “When you refused to come back with me, I thought…” He stopped when Erestor held up his hand.
“I hope I did not upset you, Meldir. If this was going to finally happen,” he said pointing from himself to Glorfindel, “I wanted it to be perfect.”
Finally moving to the bed, Glorfindel sat down and took Erestor’s hand. “Understand something, Erestor. I cannot do this; I do not want this for only one night.”
Erestor smiled brightly. “Glorfindel, I have loved you since I first laid eyes on you, but I never wanted to be just another in your bed, so I have prayed to the Valar that they guide me to you when the time was right.”
Cupping the dark elf’s face, Glorfindel leaned closer and whispered. “The time is right. I love you, Erestor.”
“And I love you, my Glorfindel.” Then they shared their first kiss that was filled with deep love and a promise of forever.
