To walk in their shoes

Feb 10, 2005 01:10

Tonight I played another lacrosse game in Darien. On the other team they had player about 200 lbs., 6' 2", and great athletic ability. His stick skills were highly creditable too. I was told as soon as the game started that this player in particular was deaf. His balance was fine, he ran like an animal, and his shot was a howitzer. Before the ( Read more... )

I believe that nearly anything is possible, you just have to believe and stay focused

thats tautalogical, i think. not to get all stupid, but what you are saying is

i believe x is possible, do perform x, i just have to believe

onto more worthy thoughts, i think people who are naturally at a disadvantage are under pressure to perform. either they fail and succumb, or they succeed. when they succeed we notice them and when they do not, it is because they have succumbed. but you do end up being exposed to truly spectacular individuals because of this.

as far as you or i go, we should be successful as we want to be, not because someone else has been. while the deaf or whomever under extraordinary duress succeeds affirms your opinion (believing in the impossible), your motivation should not be because of others success in certain areas, but your own desire to be good and worthwhile in your own.

it isn't about matching or surpassing their success. it is a reminder that one isn't tapping into his full potential.

many of us have the lost the drive that our parents had when they were our age. often, the stakes were alot higher for them, and we then rested within the comfort they provided for us. that made us lazy. having a safety net through our parents shouldn't give any of us an excuse to slack off.

ok well that last part was mostly a response to the part about foreign students. but yeah, you get it.

it seems like your finding some purpose and direction. that is awesome. you're determined person, that's why you ended up at this conclusion, while others might not understand. you are already a quite 'involved' person, but now you should probably take everything to the next level. work harder in school, improve your lax game, perfect your breakdancefighting skills, etc. i'm glad your taking charge, its all a part of growing up.
