I'm pretty sure he was a non-believer, and a very intelligent one at that. Too many atheists are ignorant of the strings that collectively hold society together. I don't think that those strings are irrefutable proof of the existence of a higher being. I do believe that the presence of such connections should make us think deeply and recognize our purpose, whether we believe it's self-assigned or preconceived. In that sense, the existence of a god is irrelevant. A global community should be of importance to every person, regardless of religious creed.
