I would also note that when Sarah Palin was announced as McCain's running mate, there was a rapid tutorial on how to pronounce her last name.

I mean, heaven forfend that we show some modicum of respect by pronouncing people's names as they pronounce them! I mean, she's Amurrrikan now (really, does the media not know that Puerto Ricans are American citizens!)

What? Are you suggesting that we should show courtesy to foreign people?

I also find it kind of amusing how everyone seems to be focusing on her heritage and upbringing. From a Supreme Court justice educational/work experience perspective, she's pretty much like the rest of them (Princeton undergrad, Yale law, appellate judge, etc.)

Their efforts to distance themselves from their "elitists" opponents has led to their own willful embrace of ignorance. And they are (probably not blissfully) ignorant of just how badly that has doomed them.

It reminds me of a great line from The West Wing where Bartlet tells his opponent for reelection that "you've turned being unengaged into a zen-like thing".

Actually, the anti-intellectualism is what turns me off the most from Republicanism in its current incarnation. It's almost as if ideas or even correctly pronouncing words is too effeminate and elite.
