Thank you very much - I enjoyed reading your review, and am now interested in reading the book. I've not read In the Shadow of Alexander either.

It's lovely to hear from you! *hugs*

"In the Shadow of Alexander" is really worth reading just for laughs. The main character is a soldier of Alexander's army who is, naturally, in love with Alexander. He cannot be with him right away, so he searches for other boys who resemble the Golden Conqueror.
I had a feeling that the whole historical background for "In the Shadow of Alexander" was taken wholesale from MR's books and Plutarch. But still, it is entertaining and at times funny to read.

"The Rise and Fall" was a great surprise, because in the beginning it is much like "In the Shadow of Alexander", with one very hesitant character and his sexual issues as the focus of the story. But as the story unfolds, it becomes more and more serious and involving, and very solemn. The ending is truly brilliant, as I have said.

I would love to discuss it if you chance to read it any time!
