Friday Five:

1) Of the various cultures, ethnicities or nationalities you belong to, which most strongly do you consider yourself? Acadian. My family left the La Chausée area of Poitou, France, and settled in Acadie in July of 1632. (specifically what is presently Nova Scotia). Then in 1755, my family was ( Read more... )

Well, hello there!

I'm not sure why my family wasn't sent to Louisiana - probably because they settled closer to modern-day Quebec; it seems most of the Acadian exiles were expelled from the maritimes. It's a chapter of Canadian history which isn't well studied outside the area, which is kind of a shame.

My grandfather was asked to participate in a documentary many years ago about either Acadians in general or about our family specifically, I don't remember. I am a LeBlanc, and apparently there are an awful lot of us :) I'll have to ask him about it, I forgot until just now and never saw it. It was being produced by some people from Nova Scotia. I am fairly certain now that I think more on it that it was on our family name and family from France and Europe to Nova Scotia, to the Northern US down to Louisiana.

Since the exile happened at the beginning of the 7 Year War, there was probably a limited amount of time and reach that Charles Lawrence had. I am not sure, though. Wacky, though, to think I could be in Guelph and you could be in Houston, had things gone just a bit differently for our familes a couple hundred years back :)

I think this is cool, so here goes:
1) I don't consider myself to be a part of anything, really. My family are all jewish, but many are ethnic jews as opposed to cultural or religious jews. I'm American, but my views and experiences don't belong to the mainstream. I guess the group I most belong to is whites. My whiteness has given me certain privileges in this society. As a white American there are many things in this world that I cannot, as much as I would like to, ever really understand.
2)Not really.
3)Chinese. There are so many chinese people in science, many of whom don't speak english. It's hard to work with people you can't communicate with.
4)Boston or Chicago
5)I would either like to meet my mom and at my age or as a little girl. Something warped her as a kid and again when I was born and I would like to know who she was before all that shit happened.
