"If my name were Jenny" by Stephanie Ann Reis
As printed in the 10/25/07 volume of "The Page" located in The Sun Chronicle
If my name were Jenny,
I'd have long hair that always fell into place.
I'd have long legs, deeper eyes, and a brighter face.
My smile would glow and my voice would be soft and
as beautiful as a bird's song.
I'd be skinnier and prettier and smell of rain-washed roses.
I'd walk in a straight line as people stopped and stared.
If my name were Jenny,
You would stare too.
If my name were Jenny,
You wouldn't hold back.
You would just go with the feel in your heart.
You would follow it.
And it would lead to me.
If my name were Jenny,
You would catch me on a bad day and make my problems disappear.
And I'd think you were a magician or something.
You would write songs and poems and share them with me.
You would promise me things I could never imagine possible.
If my name were Jenny,
I'd be sitting on your front lawn with you watching the world go by.
We'd be making fun of innocent pedestrians, counting robins, and throwing
rocks into the street watching cars run over them.
If my name were Jenny,
You would take the time to get to know me
To figure me out
At least you'd try.
You would tell me that I was different and beautiful inside and out.
You would call me understanding and wonderful, funny, loud and sweet
And tell me that how the first time you met me ... I swept you off your feet.
You would make me smile and make me sing and with all the joy I've ever known,
shout out loud and dance and jump and just go all crazy and things inside.
And it would be a great feeling.
It would be incredible.
If my name were Jenny,
It would be late at night and you would be holding me.
The moment would be perfect ... just us together.
We'd be perfect together.
You would tell me all the things I want to hear while you stroked my hair
telling me you would never let me go.
But my name is not Jenny.
So I'm just guessing
Because I'll never really know.
