twirly's birthday.
Alice doesn't mind you, he had said with a twist of irony.
Granite poured down the staircase and she knew it had to be something more.

Why can't you see how beautiful you are? Cold fingertips brushed brown hair out of her eyes as she looked up. Alice smiled, and Bella's glance flicked away.
No one else can be beautiful in this house, Bella said, and at first she thought she was referring to the entire family.
Pretty things are born, not made, Alice whispered. Her palm lifted Bella's chin until their gazes matched, but Bella's eyes lied. They stared at the softness of pink lips instead.
---
What if you were the one to change me?
The question hung in the air, tied to the ceiling with string until the swaying back and forth made her queasy.
Slowly, Alice moved, balancing her pace with that signature grace, rocking her weight forward with each step.
Testing her control.
Hands rested on Bella's shoulders and Alice walked her back carefully, until the creases of her knees hit the side of the bed. Alice came closer, closer, until their bodies touched in quiet places, and then pushed Bella gently backwards.
(Bella's mind stopped working.)
For a moment Alice waited, as still as only a vampire could be. Bella's eyes were closed. Was she afraid?
A frozen cheek rested against the side of Bella's warm neck before that face turned, breathing onto exposed skin. It was only then that Bella's heart started beating faster, liquid pumping just below the surface.
Her teeth hovered an inch away and she needed to give in. Her tongue, instead, slid across that skin, mouth opened wide to drink it in because she thought she could taste it.
Bella bit her lip to keep from making a sound.
The tiny whisper in her ear said, I think it would be too much for me.
And Bella knew it was true.
---
She planned the wedding without much sadness.
A lot can happen in eternity.
---
One last thing, she said.
With a hand on the inside of Bella's thigh, she adjusted the strip of fabric a little more than she needed. Her fingers grazed skin as she retreated, and Bella understood.
It meant: I'll always be here.
---
Bella never planned to take her up on the offer.
