I'm a wet cat on a pedestal

Oct 30, 2007 11:49

So a long time ago there was a group of kindly researchers who came up with an ingenious* experiment to determine the effects of REM sleep deprivation on the immune system. Knowing that REM sleep makes it impossible to maintain muscle tension they decided to put cats on little pedestals in a big pool. When the cats fell asleep the locked their ( Read more... )

I'm sure you've probably tried this, but I'll go ahead and make the obvious suggestion of ear plugs. I know they worked wonders for me when I lived in Brown. If your concern is about waking up on time in the morning (i.e., not hearing the alarm clock), just consider which is worse: 1) Getting to work on time but being narcoleptic all day or 2) Getting to work a few minutes late but being well-rested, happy, and able to do a good job. It's the lesser of two evils, my friend, the lesser of two evils.

Also, if you have a cat, it will jump on you and wake you up if you don't respond to its cries, often long before the alarm would have woken you. It works for me.

So...the combined suggestion from you two is to get ear-plugs and then replace my alarm clock with a cat? I'll...um, think about that.

My main problem with any such solution is the tacit acceptance that this problem is going to persist forever. The fundamental fact here is that $900 is not a rent that is being paid for an apartment that wakes me up at 4. It causes me anger and despair.

How long are you stuck there? Are you considering subletting? I take it you live under someone and there isn't a giant rodent stomping on or in the roof. Which happens.

Maybe you should just start keeping vampire hours :)

Yea, but that assumes that the noise doesn't happen during the day and since I'm at work during the day I don't know if that's the case. I think I heard it happen in the evening once or twice.

Well, as someone who NEEDS at least 8 hours of sleep a day, all I can do is sympathize. That sucks!

you might want to rent a hotel room for a couple of nights, so that you can get somewhat back on track. It is a temporary solution, but might allow you to progress at work better for a few days at least easing the fears of your co-workers.

is there another room in the apartment that the banging isn't as loud? Or least minimal. I know that when I sleep with soft music on, I tend to ignore the "house noises" and fall asleep faster and am more rested when I wake.

I am sorry you're going through this, as I have been in a similar stuation, but mine was from an inconsiderate roommate.

As far as I can tell this isn't happening to anyone else in the place. It's localized directly above my bedroom. But all the rooms are full, so asking for a switch won't work.

That sucks about the roommate. I got lucky with mine all through college.

I'm sorry that you're feeling lousy. Sleep deprivation does bad things to people. Until the issue is resolved, one way or the other, I can only echo the suggestion of earplugs - or possibly those sound dampening earphones plugged into a clock radio.

Yea, if it keeps up I may actually go with the suggestion of earplugs. I couldn't do headphones, I roll around entirely too much to be wearing something with wires.
