What determines when we're meant to leave? Would you call it something as fanciful as destiny? Logically speaking, it's apparently arbitrary. I've asked myself this question time and time again: why does someone enter the city, stay a month, and then leave on their 32nd day? Why can someone stay for three years and never seem to leave?

Fred didn't want to leave, either. Didn't stop them from taking him.

I never said it was that simple. Merely wanting hardly does anything.

What's with the cheap philosophy, then?

What philosophy? I'm only asking questions. Hypothetical questions.

[ a pause. ]

And I'm curious what people have to say.

I don't want to leave. Do you think they'll let me stay for three years, too?

If I knew, I wouldn't have asked.

You're not the only one that don't want to leave. I'd like to know how it works too.

We seem to be in the minority. Most want to leave.

Yeah. They've all got somethin' they want to go back to. Guess some of us just have more here we want to stay for.

I wouldn't call it more. I mean, you're trapped in a vacuum. But it does seem easier to become complacent when you're cut off from the momentum of your own world.

I doubt either of those. Maybe this place is just usually too busy for people to ask.

[ Does she want to leave? Yes and no. She isn't so sure anymore. There's too much to interest her here, but can she live in a dream (even one that isn't a dream, not really)? She doesn't know. ]

Where can we pick them up?

Busy? Certainly, what we all have too much of here is time.

Those who don't ask have probably recognized the futility of it. Wanting doesn't stop inevitability-- we all will leave, and when--- that's just a random event. But at the same time, it's hard not be curious.

[He pauses. ]

There's a cafe close to the square. Atlas Cafe. I'll be there at 12 tomorrow.

Time and questions.

You're sure it's inevitable? [ That's something new -- most people are focused on "what if it never happens" instead of "what if it does". ]

I'll be there, then.

Three acquaintances left recently. They had left briefly before, but all together, they had been here for longer than three years.

It's not forever.

Any left?

[No, seriously: he will take a cat if you need someone to take one.]
