I was urged to watch Scott Pilgrim by friends, and it looked okay - over-the-top comic-book action, video game references - and the reviews were middling. So I watched it ( Read more... )

It was explained to me that the whole movie is a video game, with "boss fights" and points/money after you win.

In fact, my sister and her bf are playing the video game of Scott Pilgrim. (Apparently you can play as Scott, Ramona, Kim, or the other guitar guy in Scott's band. And Knives is a power-up. No idea why those other people would need to fight Ramona's exes.)

And omgosh, the bit where Scott died, but then came back because he had an extra life, I found that one of the most cool points of the film. Because it's just like in a video game, where you go back to the save point when you have an extra life. Get it? He got the extra life when he beat, ummm someone. I had totally forgotten about that by that time in the film.

Favourite quotes:
"What's the L word?"
"The other L word?"
"I'm in lesbians with you!"
"Well, I'm bi-furious!"

Haha.. I have a one track mind.

Oh, 5 and 6 were the nihonjin futago. I forgot about them.

Video games have very different ideas about death and morality to a dramatic film, and I don't think they communicated what the accepted worldview well enough. The chip that Graves puts into Ramona costs both characters complexity in their motivations, and it's weird watching Envy and Ramona not react after Todd and Roxy burst into coins.

I understood the extra life business, but it kind of cheapens his choices because they aren't "real".

Perhaps it can all be explained by "It was a stupid movie". Enjoyable, but stupid. Haha.
