Ok, so, I saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azaban Thursday at 11:59 on the IMAX. Here are my thoughts:
Short Version: I liked it
Long Version:
Wow, that movie was just beatiful. The new director nailed the feel for it. I absolutely loved Buckbeak and the Dementors. It was nice to see CGI blend in so well. Lupin and Trelawny were absolutely awesome, and Fudge was exactly as I pictured him... well, if only he had the lime green bowler (why'd the leave that out!?)
... Which leads me to this:
1) Why exactly has Malfoy and the Slytherins been reduced to Sniveling Gits? This is supposed to be Potter's Great Rival? Please! Slytherin is for the clever and cunning... Malfoy is neither in this movie. (Although the paper crane was great!)
2) Worst Warewolf transformation EVER!!!!. I HATED Lupin's wolf form. He should have just looked like a wolf. PERIOD. There is no arguing this.
3) Why don't they explain why Sirius went to Hogwarts!? How did he know about Petigrew? I mean, I know 'cause I read the book, but people in the cold must have been like 'wtf?'
4) This ones much less minor, but why didn't Harry's Patronous turn into a Stag the second time? I mean, it should have been the same, right?
5) They really didn't spend enough time explaining what an Animagus is. They made it sound like anyone could do it, while in the book, it's emphasized how rare it is, and rather impressive that they could do it.
There was one thing I liked better then the book too! When Lupin went out to use the secret tunnel under the whomping willow, someone said "Oh, hey, wait a second... he's a fucking wizard! Why doesn't he just use magic to get past the tree, instead of a knot on the tree and a stick."
Ok, so the topic of the new Dumbledor has to come up. Here's my 2 cents: He's no Richard Harris, but he does a damn good job. In the first scene, I didn't like him at all, but as the movie went on I realized what he was doing. He really emphasized the mischeivious side of Dumbledor; something that Harris really didn't do much of. Harris emphasized the care taker in him more. I still say Harris was better for the Role, and he'll always be Dumbledor in my mind, but the new Dumbledor is good too.
Cool Parts:
- The Night Bus fucking ruled.
- The Dementors were great (even if the Patronous wasn't)
- Loved the Boggart scene.
- Aunt Marge floating over head when Harry left was a great painting of the corner.
- Holy shit, did Nevil lose some wait
- OMG! Hogwarts has black and asian students now! And they can even TALK!
- 4 years and counting.... wait, forget I said that.
I can't wait for Goblet next year. I only wonder how they'll fit it all in.
P.S. Cho had better be in the next one!
