It's sort of like in the Bible when Jesus is talking about fasting. Jesus said in the 29th chapter of Matthew (paraphrasing Matthew 6:
“Moreover, when you write, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be writing. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you write, anoint your head and shave your face (or legs if you are a woman), 18 so that you do not appear to men to be writing, but to your editor who is in the secret place; and your editor, who reads in secret, will reward you with a publishing contract--or at least, a clean copy of your self-published manuscript."
