 Did my first day with the Conservation Volunteers yesterday. We build a fence. It was a beautiful and awesome fence. Eventually, the fence will keep a bunch of Highland Cows on a meadow. This is conservation because grazing is good for diversity on meadowlands, without a nice strong grazing pressure the ground level plants quickly get shaded out ( Read more... )

That's a really neat project, here in areas of the US, we'd want to keep cattle out of places beacuse their eating habits cause too much rain run off.

There's a longer project I'm hoping to work on later in the year that does a lot of exclusion fencing; the charity has bought a highland estate and is working to reforest it with native trees, one of the best ways to do this is just to fence off areas around the edge of existing woodlands to keep the deer and sheep off.

'Twas a fair few years ago, I was feeling eco-friendly and bored. Looking back, I may well have been the only person there of their own accord and not because someone in a wig asked them nicely!
Nice chaps though. Wot fun!
