today, I have decided to take offense at something

community.livejournal.com/fursuitauctions/1378209.html

It includes such choice quotes as "anything over $600 for a head is a bit of a ripoff, imo", "Say you spend - oh, 15 hours on a head." and the classic "no offence to anyone who makes or sells heads for an insanely high price".

Sure, it's ( Read more... )

oh it doesn't particularly bother me, since I know the people making those posts have no idea what they're talking about. It's very much voluntarily taking offence

I giggled XD

Always amuses me to see people make random generalizations about the breakdown of fursuits. They always underestimate the labour and the cost of materials by atleast a factor of 4 and always totally forget about overhead completely.

And then because they can do basic math they figure that proves they know more than the rest of us and we're all cheats and liers and RICH BEYOND OUR DREAMS XD

So I plan to retire when I'm 30 and then tour the world on party jets drinking wine and stuffing $100 buills into stripper's g-strings for the rest of my life.

You?

Speed, price, quality. Pick two, people, and stop complaining people doing art for a living cannot do all three for you.

Well I obviously fully agree. But people who whine around here are just too used to everything in the fandom being underpriced.

Your points are completely reasonable. As you said A) it's ignorance to think a decent quality head is going to be made in 15 hours. Try twice that or more for a good one. And B) 300$ for a full suit is absurd. The material costs are half that. And if some magic costume builder managed to make her entire partial fursuit in say....25 hours (15 for the head, 10 for everything else) and charged only $300 then she'd only be making six bucks an hour. She would make more working at McDonalds

There are always going to be people wanting something for nothing. They can complain as much as they like, fair compensation is the only way to make both the artist and the customer happy. It's not greed to want to be fairly compensated for the time and effort of building a suit, but it is greed to want someone's hard work for a fraction of it's worth. In the real world custom clothing is far from cheap. Even getting a pre-made suit tailored can be pricey. Fursuits are worth the time, materials, and skill that goes into them.

15 hours for a head or $300 for a partial aren't realistic based on the arts and crafts nature of the current fursuit business, however it should be considered that both of those would be achievable not only if the maker was really bad at suit making, but also if they were really good at it.

But no, they aren't realistic prices or time scales. and "No offense" is always a prelude to an insult! :)

Oh absolutely, mass or batch production and different methods would bring prices right down, look how cheap those gigantic tiger plushes are and their heads have similar sizing and detail to a suit head. but of course, a OOAK art plush might cost 5 times the price of a fairground tiger
