I bumped into the 50bookchallenge community through lj_spotlight at the beginning of this year. While being very impressed with the challenge, I didn't immediately feel up to taking up the challenge. So this comment is what? two months late? Oh well, I only just saw the post. And I'm so glad you didn't gush about "On Beauty"-- I am tired of academics and poseurs lauding it. It. Was. Crap. And pretentious crap too. *And* my own personal rant: Zadie Smith quoted Ancient Greek lyrics and cited them as being Latin. Seriously?!?!?!

I didn't think it was crap, but I didn't think it was excellent either. The craft was obviously there, but it smacks of insufficient research, this book...
